A Staver Chicago car attempting a Chicago to Des Moines road record plunged into the Skunk River five miles south of Chicago on a Sunday afternoon during the final lap. Driver Harry B. Staver and crew escaped without injury though L. R. Maxwell suffered a broken shoulder earlier.
