Chris Olson of Story City was struck and killed by a southbound train at an open crossing in Boone after attending a circus. The collision shattered his skull, killed his horse, and wrecked the buggy. A coroner’s jury exonerated the railroad company. Olson was about 35, a bachelor and sole support for his widowed mother.
County Attorney Hadley seized two barrels of beer shipped to Sam Kee at the Northwestern depot in Nevada for illegal shipment to a nonresident. A rumor tied the beer to a northern farmer, but neither party appeared at Justice Smith's court. The beer was dumped into Indian Creek after bottles were broken, raising questions about potential offenses by presiding officers. Hadley ponders who Sam Kee is and suspects the name may hide Charley.
John Wakefield, a farmer three miles north of Ames, was injured when a pulley linked rope broke and struck him in the forehead as he inspected a hay fork. He lost consciousness briefly but doctors removed bone splinters and expect possible recovery given his strong condition.

Jennie Illingworth known as Mrs Geo Posegate filed suit in Justice Thompson's court against John Ashdown to recover 41 dollars minus a 6 50 payment for cooking services at his restaurant. The verdict awarded 34 50 to the plaintiff. Atty Pasley represented her.
Earl Belt contemplates erecting a cottage on the corner of Duff Avenue and College Street on a lot recently purchased north of the Marion Cupps cottages.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Newhard will relocate to the Hultz cottage on Kel logg Avenue starting August first.
Grace Williams daughter of Mr and Mrs J F Williams married Harle S Baird of Prairie City in the first ceremony held in the new church. Rev Andrew M Shea officiated with Floyd L Williams as best man and Ieil M Shearer as bridesmaid. Baird of Baird and Son grocers Prairie City Iowa known for steady habits and business skill. The Times extends best wishes for happiness and success.
A group of gypsies camped near Ames and unhitched horses that damaged Burt Kooser's corn field. The next morning Mrs. Kooser alerted the marshal who began a patrol to locate the suspects and brought a patrol wagon to the scene.
Marshal Thompson enlists Carl Anderson to chase a gypsy caravan led by A L Potter. After demanding damages for a corn field turned pasture, the party pays via horse security and a coin trick involving Jerry Sexton ends with a knot tied in a handkerchief and the rest left undisclosed.
The Ames Chautauqua outlines ticket sales to fit all budgets. Prices vary by age and session with early bird discounts for adults and special numbers for listed speakers. Children ages 8 to 15 have separate pricing and single admission covers all daytime and evening events.
The Philadelphia Nationals traded pitcher Yank Brown and two others to the Boston Americans for two players. Once a star at Iowa State College, Brown rose from the Omaha Western league to the St. Louis Nationals and then Philadelphia. His performance this year has been modest, but he remains known as a wholesome, capable ballplayer when healthy.
A hotel water tank yielded a pocket book with a July check to Ed Miller from Christ. The purse passed to W. H. Smith for labor, then theft altered hands when Smith’s pocket was picked. The plumber’s discovery supports a suspect tossed the purse into the tank to hide the money.
Veteran rural mail carrier Uncle Henry May tripped on a loose sidewalk board last Friday at about seven in the morning. His left shoulder was dislocated but medical attention was prompt and he is progressing well. He remains active and shows continued interest in town life.
John Sesker of the southern county returns sooner than expected from a trip to Norway. At 84, 52 years since he left his homeland, he finds much changed though the mountains look the same. Norwegian papers call him the oldest returning Norwegian American. The Bluelands will come back later.
Gene Roll purchased J. J. Ferguson's spotted pony this week and also acquired a fine new diving buggy, completing two local exchanges in a single period.
The fall term at Nevada opens September 18 with numerous title actions to quiet title including B A Lockwood Grain Co versus J W Conner and wife and J H Lafferty versus Mary Ellen Sapp. Also noted are damages cases John Peck versus John Morris and guardian appointment petitions Tom Larson versus John Thompson re plevin and L Thompson versus Sarah Thompson.
Professor B W Crossley came back from East Lansing Michigan where he studied legumes. He plans to add legume farming as a new branch to the Iowa State College farm department in 1910. If no suitable successor to M L Bowman is found Bowman's duties may fall to Crossley.
A daughter was born on Tuesday July 18 to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Gilder.
