Mr. George Jones died Wednesday afternoon at his home south of the college. He was a little over 75 years old. Funeral arrangements are not definite but are likely to be held tomorrow afternoon.
Miss Clara McCrory severed ties with the Perry store after nearly a year of service. She plans to focus on home life with her two brothers, while sister Hattie heads west seeking a milder climate.
A. J. Corbin aged sixty eight who lived with his son H. T. Corbin in the north part of the city suffered a paralytic stroke yesterday and died this morning at four o'clock. The remains go to Manning Iowa for interment tomorrow at 9:20 AM.
Adjutant General Guy K. Logan of Des Moines declared Gen James Rush Lincoln of Ames elected brigadier general of the Iowa National Guard. Lincoln led the Fifty-fifth as colonel and won 145 of 150 votes. He becomes field commander for an eight year term, with a vacancy to fill in the Fifty-fifth regiment. Funeral details note his long Polk County pioneer family and death at his son’s home in Ames.
While returning to Nevada after a Story County Medical Society meeting, Drs Connor and Bailey were ditched on the east Ames grade. The auto hit a mud hole, slid across the road, and toppled into a barb wire fence. The axles bent slightly, tires remained intact, and Bailey sustained a minor arm scratch.
Montgomery McCall of Ames dies at 5 20 am July 4 at age ninety one years one month and four days. A lifelong resident born June 1 1815 in Wayne County Indiana he remained active on Ames streets until shortly before his passing. He spent youth in Ohio and Illinois where he married Hanna Hil.
A gang of pickpockets targeted riders in crowded street cars on Saturday forenoon. Victims across Ames, Nevada, Boone and Jefferson counties report cash losses, checks, a gold watch, and a tax receipt book. A sheriff and railroad detectives conducted extra patrols but could not arrest the culprits as the crowd dispersed.
The last building was removed from the post office site last week leaving a trackless waste awaiting a $60,000 building. No obstacles remain and the government has permission to begin. $35,000 has already been appropriated toward a good start.
P C Hanson a pioneer lumber and grain dealer was assisting workmen tearing down an old barn east of McCallsburg last Wednesday afternoon when a falling timber crushed him. He died two days later from injuries after being warned to move but was struck as he stepped aside.
Mr and Mrs Clyde Shultz announce the arrival of a baby boy born last Thursday at their home. They express joy and share the glad family news with relatives and friends.
From the Story City Herald we learn heavy week end rains washed out bridges north of Mackey and a series of mishaps. Lightning killed eight head of cattle for Chas Crouse and two cows for T H Torkels. Fritz Peter lost a cow. A runaway nearly injured Guy Heers. Grant Brown’s son broke a collar bone after a piano stool fall. An A K Helvig barn was struck by lightning and burned.
Structural work on Morris livery stable is finished and the interior will soon be completed. When Mr. Morris moves in the old barn will be wrecked and a bank building erected by the progressive owner.
Dr BE Cc Unbehaum formerly of Roland who became a notable pitcher and first baseman married Miss Etta Hastings a Roland school teacher last week. The ceremony occurred at the bride’s home in McIntyre Iowa and the couple will reside in Winthrop.
An electrical storm that hit Roland last week killed two cattle owned by J. T. Sande and damaged Dr. E. D. Rosheim’s home. Insurance covered much of the losses in both cases.
Miss Anna Sweeney traveled to Des Moines with Dr. D. M. Christ and underwent operation by Dr. Amos at the Methodist hospital. The eye was removed, leaving her blind in the affected eye while the other eye remained at risk.
Mrs. Mary Poage left Monday morning for Des Moines and entered Methodist hospital for an operation performed by Dr. O J Fay. The procedure went safely and she is progressing finely but will likely stay about three weeks.
Jonas Duen a clerk at the 8 J Michaelson store in Roland narrowly escaped drowning in Bear Creek after heavy rains swelled the current A group of boys swam the stream Duen went under twice and was saved by Obed Sandren as he prepared for a third dive to help him recover himself.
Adrian M. Newens of Iowa State College, recently joined the Redpath Lyceum Bureau after leaving the college, was re-elected president of the National Speech Arts Association at Ashbury Park New Jersey. The convention next year will be in Cleveland Ohio.
The Liverpool Journal of Commerce reports the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railway exhibit at Earl's Court London. A 47 foot long by 21% foot high world’s largest map presents the railway’s interests. Mr. Morrison, former local, is immigration agent in charge.
E R Howard of the fourth ward has returned from Texas after improving irrigated land. He will go to Chicago with G E Burton to purchase a full line of gent's furnishings for a new store in Brownsville, the city tied to the Brownsville riot.
