The Glasgow Times notes Hoyle did not invent whist but popularized scientific whist. A barrister by profession and Ireland’s registrar of the prerogative, Hoyle was born in 1670 and died in 1767 at ninety seven. He earned £1000 from his whist treatise, which ran through five editions in a year and was widely pirated. He taught whist for a guinea a lesson and advanced probability calculations guided play, drawing attention from a famed mathematician who lectured on odds at coffee houses for a fee.

A Chicago built four cylinder fourteen passenger auto named the Desert Flyer halted briefly in Ames on its way to Reno to replace the old stagecoach mail route. Driven by the owner with two associates, the machine demonstrates the western utility of motor travel for mail and passengers along rough trails and against weather and road hazards.
