An examination of cranks in society, from harmless dreamers to the gunman with one idea. The piece surveys how ideas spread, the dangers of violent bent, and the social urge to ignore minor oddities while confronting deadly intent.
The author warns that sensationalism in the press and political fervor fuel homicidal cranks and undermine the justice system. Mockery of due process, libel, and public excitement cultivate a “crank” mentality, eroding self restraint and aiding murderers. Until society curbs this, cynical attitudes and reckless journalism persist.
The temperature and sunshine were below normal across the state with cool and cloudy conditions through Saturday and a recent rise to seasonable warmth. Showers were frequent and well distributed but rainfall ran under normal except in the east central west central and central districts. Corn growth is satisfactory though cultivation is hampered by showers. hay harvest is delayed and clover damaged though hay yield may be large if weather improves. Small grain shows good straw growth and needs warm dry weather to mature.
Oats rust reports rise but state wide small grain prospects look good. Potatoes fruit and garden truck stable. Crop correspondents rate conditions relative to last year with corn 85, winter wheat 99, oats 90, hay 103, pastures 104, potatoes 99, apples 50, plums 40, grapes 80. Area planted in corn 94 of last year, down 6 percent.
City of Ames Iowa resolves to build curbs on Onondaga Douglass Kellogg streets with precise measurements and materials. Costs will be paid by special assessments against abutting properties with detailed concrete mix and curb dimensions. Public hearing set for July 30 1908 at City Hall in Ames Iowa. Rex family and friends report the marriage of John Leecing formerly of this county to Mary Lenora Wells a teacher in Rocky Ford Colorado on Thursday June 25. The couple will reside in Rocky Ford.
