Fire swept through the historic residence The Gables on the college campus yesterday afternoon destroying the building known as the former home of President Welch. Mrs. Sallie Stalker Smith and Miss Elizabeth Stratton assisted in the escape. tenants plan to live with Prof A A Kennety until arrangements are made. The Gables was insured for 4000 dollars and the fire likely started from defective wiring or a faulty flue.

State Oratorical Contest To Be Held Here In March
The State Oratorical Contest will be held in the Agricultural assembly at the college on the evening of March 7. Ames will host the event with several colleges represented. About eight delegates will deliver speeches and the host college plans elaborate pre contest entertainments and committees will arrange expenses and hospitality for visiting colleges.

Lecture Course Draw to be Held Friday
A college lecture ticket draw is set for Friday at 1 PM in Treasurer Knapp's Office for campus students and at Judison's store for downtown residents. A white draft horse ran away in Ames injuring no one fatally but dragging a cutter and riderless dray near the electronic light plant. Blaze at Horsley Home Narrowly Surfaces

The blaze started in the basement flue above the furnace and filled the house with smoke before firefighters contained it.
