The city council met February 5 in regular session with Mayor Sheldon present. The body approved warrants for bond interest and other payments, planned a pump upgrade at the water works, addressed fire signal service and hydrant instructions, and authorized sidewalk bids and registrar appointments. Hydrant issues prompted a water protection review after multiple fires.
The Ames Savings Bank changed hands as M A Manning sold a large block of stock to R O Hasbrouck of Hunester Iowa A R Atros of Des Moines and W O Meltzer of Ames Meltzer elected president Hasbrouck cashier Manning retains stock until April 1 to assist transition. Manning plans to remain in Ames afterward.
Coach Clyde Williams travels back from New York where he and peers on the national football rules committee proposed sweeping changes. The plan includes a 100 yard field, ten yard zones, longer touchdown value, extra downs, elimination of the onside kick, and a shifted kickoff and timing format affecting college play nationwide.
At the January meeting of the board of supervisors a new Kelley precinct was formed combining eight sections from Palestine township and eight from the southern Wash ington part of Walk ing township. The Palestine area covers sections 2 4 5 6 7 and 10 just south of Kelley. Residents of south Washington previously voted in Ames and north Palestine in Slater, forcing long drives and wasting a day for voters.
For twenty five years Story County farmers have benefited from mutual insurance lowering costs. The Story County Mutual gives fire and lightning cover at reduced rates with full value payouts and liberal loss adjustments, funded by assessments and local farmer participation.
The Double A fraternity held its annual Ames banquet at the Alumoi hot cafe on Wednesday night. Toasts honored college athletics and the athlete as a graduate while Clyde Williams and Jack Watson received Hamilton gold watches. Coach John Griffith and former track captain Dutch Kraft attended the event with the 38 members of the fraternity and 14 athletic council members also present.
Lon Ellett, head teamster for the ii Io Co s can bra, was injured Monday when a wagon loaded with craw tipped over on the road to the Vinz farm east of town. He fell into a ditch and sustained serious injuries, putting him out of commission for work.
Arthur Bauer has bought Mauck Drug Co. in Lake City Iowa and moved there with his family to run the store. He has long operated in Ames in the firm Loughran and Bauer and is noted as a respected local businessman.
Mrs Dimmick won first prize in Armour & Company’s January kitchen economy contest in Iowa. Her escalloped tomatoes recipe aims to cut living costs by providing original practical ideas for home cooking.
Donald Ward Lewis was born to Dr. and Mrs. N. W. Lewis of Shenandoah Iowa on January 31. Mrs. Lewis is identified as Miss Grace Padmore a former city schools teacher and a noted member of the K. K. club.
Dean Curtiss and Prof Kennedy attended the meeting at the Savery hotel in Des Moines last week. Prof Kennedy delivered an address at the Iowa Reef Producers association gathering.
The Ames Telephones Association annual meeting will be at Odd Fellows Hall in Ames on a February Saturday. Officers for the coming year will be elected and other business will be discussed. County representative Kon Wo Ow from Boone County will address cooperation. Farmers are urged to attend for a profitable afternoon. Joseph A. Dude, Secretary.
Pure Food Store proprietor Mr. R. A. Knudsen has installed a new counter and glass front cases to showcase the shop’s pure foods. The updated fixtures give the store a refreshed, nearly new appearance and invite downtown visitors to inspect the displays.
Miss Parker joins the Home Economics department to teach sophomore girls, taking Miss Viall's place. She hails from Grinnell and is a graduate of Iowa College at Grinnell and Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls.
Prof P G Holden republican candidate for governor stays in demand with lectures across states. He spoke at Grand Forks North Dakota to the State Agricultural Association then in Des Moines for Newton and the Corn show and Cedar Falls short course. He plans a series of talks in Des Moines Hoyt Sherman Place and Elmwood church with engagements in Waukon and at a Woman’s club in Des Moines.
Hon. Thos. Lambert from Sabula and Jackson County state senator spent the first of the week in Ames inspecting the college and meeting with officials. Lambert, a member of the senate finance committee, visited to assess progress on state appropriations to Ames.
The Chicago Great Western St Paul and Kansas City trains were detoured from Marshalltown through the North Western route to Ames on Sunday due to a freight train stuck in snow between Marshalltown and Des Moines. The blockage disrupted traffic on that section all day.
Mr. Charles Hamilton departed Monday for a trip lasting a month or more. He began in Chicago and plans to travel to Florida and then visit additional southern locations.
A grate fire at the Pi Beta Phi sorority house Sunday evening caused excitement as students gathered. Prompt action with water buckets prevented major damage to woodwork despite a big blaze.

Mrs. C. 4. Duntz stayed with Marshalltown friends this week. Mrs. Ed Wilson paid a visit over Sunday in Belle Plaine.
