A fire Tuesday morning completely destroyed the W. T. Barr home five miles north of Ames. Barr started the fire in the house then checked the barn. he saved his wife and children but suffered facial and hand burns. Losses include stock certificates and pedigrees, with total damage about $2,000 and $1,000 insured.
The LL. C. exhibit at the Iowa corn show highlights a 10 by 12 foot soil map detailing the state's five soil varieties. An oats display shows a five year average for twelve leading oat types and demonstrations cover crop rotation and soil improvement through changing crops.
The council acted on sewer and alley paving, rejected Lou Cole’s pool hall petition, and ordered street improvement bonds. A later adjourned meeting discussed Grand Kellogg and Duff avenues paving, with a two inch wearing surface on a five inch Portland cement base favored after study.
In Des Moines the Old Colony Trust Company seeks to intervene in the Fort Dodge Des Moines Southern Railway dispute. Judge Smith McPherson appoints C L Dahlberg to take depositions and report. Receivers oppose intervention citing costs and limited stations between Des Moines Junction and Goddard. Freight bans imply track abandonment. court decision awaited with likely end result abandonment.
W. E. Shannon a well known Ames resident is seriously ill at his home in Thomas Oklahoma with typhoid fever. He is reported to be resting quietly under a physician care and friends are asked to send prayers.
With football season over, basketball practice has begun under Coach Williams. A heavy schedule is expected once the Missouri Valley conference meeting sets it, Mosher to captain the squad with J. Brown te Veltrup Chappel Walker Wiese De Vault and Barker among key players.
A Hill Tripp pump is being installed in the city well drilled last winter. If water flow permits, the pump will raise 400 gallons per minute. It may take about two weeks to complete installation and testing.
"Shorty" Davis a wrestler who appeared around the area this fall was arrested in Marshalltown Friday on a charge of jumping a board bill in Iowa City and was taken back Saturday to answer the charge. Davis real name Runyan is described as a four flusher and he lingered here as if arranging a match with Jess Reimer.
Concilmen Lambert and White with Van Chamberlain E W Perry J W Horrabin and the writer visited Perry on Tuesday to inspect the recently completed paving. They considered Ames spring paving plans and studied block and bitulithic and creosote block approaches used in Perry. Residents discussed satisfaction with creosote block and preference for bitulithic.
Mrs Emil Mathison a bride of eleven months and mother of a young baby committed suicide at her Story City home by shooting herself in the temple with a rifle shortly after eight Friday morning. Despondency over her father's illness at the Nevada sanitarium was given as the cause.
The fifth annual Ames Poultry Breeders association show at the Armory showcases about one hundred entries across many breeds including Rhodas land Red, White Wyandotte, Ballon Rocks, White Rocks, Buff Orpington, and Partridge Wyandotte. Exhibitors come from Boone, Carroll, Nevada, Gowrie, Sumner, Fairfield, Slater, Cole Jewell, Stanhope and Marshalltown with judges Mills and Perkins set to publish prize winners next week.
Bill Tener former college athlete and Y M C A worker spoke at Ag assembly hall on Sunday about conditions in the Philippines. He praised Y M C A work and noted support from financiers bankers and college men for his Philippine mission and future plans.
A campus wide whistle test is planned for next Wednesday December 14 at about 5 00 PM. Signals will differ by location with a general call and specific patterns for different campus areas. Participants are advised to note the whistle codes and test results for future reference.
Ellsworth Post No 30 elected its 1911 officers at a Saturday meeting. Cmdr E B Crambill S V Cmdr H D Squyer J W Cmdr Roger Sheehey Chap J C Copestake Quartermaster C E Haverley Surgeon J P Alderman Day Officer A H Buck G W Lyman. A delegate to the Muscatine Iowa encampment was chosen with J W Knight as delegate and D A Nash as alternate. The post voted to hold one meeting monthly on the first Saturday at 2 30 pm.
The Fort Dodge Des Moines and Southern Railway Co. assumed formal possession Thursday of the Crooked Creek line from Webster City to Lehigh. Negotiations lagged but possession moved up thanks to the Lehigh Land and Coal Co. arrangement, hastening expected electrification and a Webster City franchise award.
Prof. F. M. Okey assistant engineer of the engineering experiment station left Ames with his wife for Poplar Bluff Missouri to supervise a drainage district covering hundreds of square miles in reclaiming swamp lands of the Mississippi for Morgan Co Memphis Tenn. He graduated from I C C in 1904 and has been an assistant at the station and worked in the southern virgin forests. The permanent position offers financial rewards though he and Mrs Okey leave behind many Ames friends with regret.
A. Williams secretary of the Iowa Cement Users Association says the annual convention will be held in Cedar Rapids January 10 13. A full program includes lectures and demonstrations on cement use and an exhibit of Portland cements mixers block and tile machines pipe molds sidewalk tools culvert forms and other cement devices. Water proofing compounds reinforcing materials and cement construction types will also be demonstrated.
The final number of the fall lecture course will be a concert by the Florentine orchestra in Ag assembly hall Saturday. Shelbyville praised their recent visit at the city's opera house, noting 18 musicians with limited English. The high school course secured the troupe at a cost well under a dollar per attendee, far less than Indianapolis prices.
Fred L. Burg visited the Des Moines naval recruiting station on Thursday and was accepted for service. He traveled to Cedar Rapids to be sworn in, then proceeded to Newport Rhode Island to await assignment to a battleship.
