The annual reunion of Story county's old soldiers will take place at the city park next Thursday and Friday August 25 and 26. State Commander Dyer of Mason City will address the veterans and a large attendance is expected with campfire and other features boosting entertainment for all ages.
Thursday evening a fire alarm rang when a gasoline stove at Charley Kooser's home on Clark avenue acted up. Charley removed it to the yard and bystanders called in the alarm. No damage occurred beyond the stove.
Hurd Cairns died Monday at his Ames home after a six week typhoid illness contracted likely in Florida. He was born March 22, 1887, married Katharine Enbody and had a son born July 7, 1909. Funeral services were at the family home, with a Des Moines speaker and local musicians. Interment was in Ames cemetery. Public schools in Ames announce opening September 5 with pre-registration for grades and high school this week and instructions for new pupils.
Ex president Theodore Roosevelt travels with a party via train from Chicago to Cheyenne, passing Ames early Saturday August 27. The article lists Roosevelt aides including William B. Miss Mey Kintzley of Ames won second place in the Necala Representative contest with 229 300 votes earning a Schultz piano. Gwen Dickey of Cambridge placed first. Kintzley hoped for a college scholarship but won the piano and plans to sell it to fund her Des Moines college goal.
Sunday Mr. Horns drove up with Tom Thomp son’s horse and a two seated buggy. Miss Merle White and another lady rode in back as he left to fetch something, the umbrella spooking the horse. Miss White grabbed the lines and stopped the horse before an accident occurred.
After weeks on a farm and at the lakes the Christian church pastor returns with renewed strength to lead. He will preach both morning and evening next Sunday and hopes to greet every member and friend at these services. The sermons promise zeal and inspiration. Mr Houser believes men crave the Simple Gospel Story.
A lightning strike during a Monday forenoon storm set fire to the John Hopkins farm barn near Nevada. The barn and its contents including two horses were destroyed. Tenant Orville Sarsfield suffered heavy loss as the barn contained ten tons of hay 200 bushels of corn oats six sets of harness and farm machinery valued at 600 dollars.
The first car load of paving blocks arrived Thursday and was unloaded at the Douglass avenue crossing. Mayor Sheldon began laying the first paving block in Story county amid a crowd, with work progressing until rain delayed it and more blocks arrived Saturday night.
Prof Brindley of the economics department leaves Monday for Milwaukee to attend the International Tax Association meeting August 30 to September 2. He will present a paper on Problems of Tax Reform in Iowa including conclusions from his tax law research and notes two volumes at press.

Powell South Dakota reports twelve year old Paul Taylor, formerly of Ames, killed a coyote using rocks while herding five hundred sheep during school vacation. He pursued the exhausted animal on his pony and is highly elated by the feat.

The Maxwell Commercial club will hold an automobile trip on Friday August 26 advertising the Old Settlers picnic and Home Coming to be held in the park on September 8. Fifteen cars will march with the Maxwell band in uniform and local leaders supervise. They will reach Ames at 2 30 and stay about an hour. They plan to attend the Old Soldiers reunion that day.

The Extension department of Iowa State College outlines daily programs during the State Fair. Sessions include Domestic Science from 10 to 11 a m and 2 to 8 p m with lantern slides and short talks on extension topics. Key events occur August 30 and 31 focusing on Junior work Ministers meeting and organizational discussions.
A ride south and southwest of Ames Friday revealed the corn crop withstood dry weather in fine shape. Only one piece showed signs of beginning to fire, on high ground with gravel soil. Recent showers improve the crop, putting it on the good side.
