Purley Sheidon mayor endorses Fourth Ward Civic Improvement circulator urging downtown wards to tidy yards, stop littering, plant trees, burn or contain waste, and prevent public property damage as Ames moves toward a general spring clean up. Detectives will watch for violations.
High School alumni planners email extensive schedules for the Ames heb schol alumimu banquet. Committees named include Finance Decorations Music and Association officers with Bernice Shucert as president, Bess Griffith as vice president, Mark Kuoser as secretary, and Myrtie Habard as treasurer.
The Ames area hails Walter Douglas and his wife among Titanic survivors and victims. Neighbors recount George Douglas once owned local property and Douglas Avenue, named after him, connecting the Boyd and Sheldon families as they await word on Walter’s fate.
Miss Maude Robinson of Gilbert will deliver an address on Sabbath observance at the Friends church in West Ames next Sunday April 21 at 3 p.m. The meeting is under the auspices of the W C T U and cordial invitations are extended to all.
Democratic gathering at the Nevada courthouse Saturday elected delegates to the state convention in Burlington. T. J. Ames athletes prep for the Drake relay carnival at Drake Stadium Des Moines with four relays including half mile and four mile events. Local stars Farquhar and Nordstrum lead distance squads as Wisconsin and Davenport plans clash and a large student crowd plans to attend for an exciting afternoon of racing.
Mike Emerson won the state peace oratorical contest at Parsons College in Fairfield last Friday, marking Ames University’s third straight victory. Judges awarded Emerson first place with Leander Clark’s C. J. Young second and Evos A. Cauterbach of Jon Wesleyan third. the winning speech titled Orient and World Peace featured a demonstrative display.
Large turnout at the college women’s gymnasium for the annual open night. Miss Winifred Tilden directed with Miss Ruth Barrett assisting. Freshmen Mimi Elliott won first honors. Rita Evans led sophomores. Events included a St Patrick’s jig with eighteen dancers and multiple apparatus routines.
The Ames team travels to Columbia Missouri for two games with the Missouri Tigers Friday and Saturday. Cold spring weather hurts form but the squad hopes to win at least one game. Probable opener: Ringheim catching Lavison pitching Kerrigan short Beckman first Hansel second Nason third Miller left Brennen center Powers right. Next home game vs Minnesota on April 25.
Miss Maisie Schreiner, Ames high school principal for six years, resigned last week with the term ending this spring. She plans rest in Albia then study at Stanford before possible return to teaching. The Board of Education praised her strong classroom leadership and administrative service.
The Iowa State College agricultural experiment station intensifies on farm testing. Director Chas. Cur tise engages a Canadian expert to guide cooperative trials. John Buchanan arrives to establish similar efforts, with over three hundred experiments under way across many progressive farms.
An agricultural college formed the Curtiss Club to advance members literary, athletic, intellectual and social goals. Two year students are eligible, with college leaders as honorary members. Officers include F. B. Hannon and Richard Thomas. The club will meet biweekly with literary programs and business sessions.
The Times misreported Mrs Carl Gamrath as undergoing major surgery at Deaconess hospital Minneapolis. The correction states it should read Mrs Chris Gamrath whose husband is nephew of Mr Lew Gamrath, and who formerly resided in Ames.
Mrs John Mather was taken to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines Tuesday and underwent an operation for appendicitis with other troubles. Her condition is reported favorable. She was accompanied by Mr Mather and yesterday her son and daughter were with her.
Ernie Grove was operated on Sunday by Drs Templeton and Budge for a severe stomach ailment. He is now reportedly recovering and getting along fine.
Dr. A. B. Maxwell is building a fine new porch on his residence on Kellogg avenue, which adds materially to the convenience, comfort and appearance of the house.
Attorney and Mrs. F B O'Brien arrived Monday from Seattle and will make Ames their future home. O'Brien rents office rooms over Dudgeons jewelry store and will open an office at once. He has two years practice in the west since leaving Towa City and returns to Ames because he likes the city and sees a field for him. The Times welcomes them to Ames.
Remembered sacred concert at the Methodist church Sunday evening May 12. Soloists chorus and orchestra will perform The Creation by Wayden.
Mrs Emily Stuckelager and Mrs Gus Martin travel with their young daughter Frances to Muscogee Oklahoma to visit the Harley Stuckslager family starting Tuesday morning.
Elmer Adams resumes work at the Geo Kintzley barber shop after an extended layoff from injuries from a fall last fall. He recovered from a broken hip and arm and can now stand in the barber chair again as patrons welcome his return.
The committee of 100 Men and Religion Movement will hold a called meeting at the M B E church Sunday at 3 p m.
Five inches of snow was reported in Fort Madison yesterday. The lingering question in readers’ minds concerns when the cruel war will end and bring relief from ongoing hardship.
The week ending April 14 1912 reports the coldest winter on record with heavy snow cover from December to March. Flooding occurred in southern counties as snow melted, while soil absorbed much moisture due to minimal ground frost. Winter wheat area rose, spring seeding depends on upcoming conditions, potatoes and gardens planted, fruits largely dormant, and livestock in fair shape though hay scarce. Overall, open later season promising a good crop year with favorable field work and continued planting.
The Ames Admens Association offered five dollars for the best slogan for Ames and a dollar for the town write up of 40 or 54 words. Very few responses were received and organizers urge more participants with ten dollars in total prize.
Miss Shirley Storm, a Home Economics graduate, will head the new department at Des Moines College next year. An Ames native, she has taught this year at Marshall High School in Minnesota.
The home of A. P. Wright in Gilbert was struck by lightning last Saturday afternoon. Shingles were blown off and minor damage occurred.
Mrs A L Potter and her mother Mrs M Austin left this morning for a two week trip to visit friends in Chicago.
