The Old Sumter County Court House to be Torn Down

The center square landmark built in the antebellum era, its gilded clock hands frozen, will soon be demolished. Once a pride of Americus and a hub for justice, judges and famed attorneys of the era held court here, including W. C. Perkins and Charles F. Crisp. The brick structure’s memory preserves rich local legal history as a new temple of justice rises in its place.

A Jumping Aligator Swamp Tale From Coffee County

Simon Wise recounts a South Georgia swamp incident observed near a mud creek where a big rusty alligator suddenly lunges, swallowing a gray squirrell in a dramatic wild scene. The tale, framed as a local color anecdote, highlights frontier nature and county lore.
