Heroic captain’s $180 debt repaid after sixteen years
Albany News and Advertiser recalls Capt. R Hobbs of Albany who saved a White Confederate line at Boonsboro in 1862. After two weeks in pain and isolation, he received a draft for 180 dollars from William Tryer, a German Jew, who had struggled to rejoin his unit. Tryer’s efforts were misread as desertion, yet Hobbs kept the memory and finally cashed the San Francisco endorsement in 1874, grateful for the act of sacrifice.
