Fortune Smiles on Augusta Filene and Lottery Win

The letter from Chicago reports Augusta Filene of 2 037 Archer Ave bright and intelligent German girl employed by Singer Sewing Machine Co. She held one tenth of lottery ticket 73 185 in the Louisiana State Lottery drawing of January 10 1888 which paid 5 000. She hopes to buy a house for her mother and herself and is described as mother's sole support. Also notes Samuel Edison father of Thomas Edison is very ill at Fort Gratiot Michigan.

Putnam Letter Reports Flooding and Local Happenings

Putnam April 4. Mr Williams runs a mill but floodwaters moved the bridge 75 yards downstream after last week’s rain. Dozier’s mill house washed away, 800 bushels corn scattered. Dogs and cows die from a rabies scare. a child nearly drowns, saved by W C Kelley.

Webster County Dams Washed Away Heavy Losses Reported

In Webster County on April 3, after last week’s rain a flood washed Kinchafoonee creeks bridges away leaving the Sherman bridge as the sole crossing. Turnpikes near Preston are ruined and county funds cannot cover $1500 to $2000 in repairs. Sampson Bell’s mill dam and facilities, plus nearby damage, leave losses estimated at $1000 to $1500. Peach crops fall to a third of average. Also notes a Shiloh church sermon by Rev T J Bell and a report on May conference fusion ideas for union and labor parties.
