Market steady and local notices in brief town column

Our market to day was steady. The Davenport Bros placed sweat wire sign at their Cotton Avenue drug store. Ed Sheffield, son of Maj J W Shefield, is improving from typho malarial fever. The Governor approved amending the Americus Preston & Lampkin Railroad charter to become Savannah Americus and Montgomery Railroad. Mayor court: Floyd Stevens found guilty of disorderly conduct, fined ten days on the street or 7.75. Street Railway right of way granted. A P L train derailment minor, no injuries. Runaway incident on Friday slight, driver unhurt. Reception for Miss Reese of Buena Vista by Miss Fry reported. Demosthenes allegedly cured stamers by pebbles, modern orators may use Dr Bulla Cough Paste. Insurance settled Brown & Harper at 75 cents on the dollar. Damaged goods to be sold at reduced prices.

Committal trial set for Wig gins and Stevenson

Mob Wig gins and George Stevenson, both colored, face murder charges in the death of John Williams. the committal trial is scheduled for Friday, January 4, with witnesses hard to summon causing delays. A Recorder job room issue reports over twenty thousand election tickets printed for Sumter, Lee, and Webster counties last Monday and up to 200,000 in the past month. Mr. P C Clegg of Mesara Clegg Co. plans to wind down Hawkinsville business and will come to Americus Monday with family to follow. Gro D Wheatley offers a closing out sale on a beautiful line at less than cost.

A Christmas Present to Wife From Dudley

Shortly before Christmas Mr. W. H. C. Dudley gave his wife a neat top buggy. He owned a horse for thirteen years and kept it at home because it was handy. His wife had feared driving the horse, but he believes she now can manage. He rarely used the horse himself and quips he may not ride again, as he seldom travels far from home.

New Variety Works to Open in Leeton on A P L Road

New Variety Works by Mr R M Stewart rises in Leeton on the A P L road and, if all goes well, will open early this week. Love of Children and Death of John Vincent Carter

The ad notes J L Wilkinson will return to the schoolroom for a week of study in state high schools and colleges to learn new teaching methods. It also reports the death of John Vincent Carter, eldest son of Calvin Carter, with condolences offered to the bereaved family. A small gold bangle found in Americus by Master Oland Daniels is to be claimed at this office.

UP Annual Inspection of the Central

The Central of Georgia will undergo its first annual inspection this month starting around the 15th. Superintendents and road masters from divisions will thoroughly survey the system to improve all divisions, with a prize for the best heat condition. The tour covers about 3,000 miles and ends around February 1.

Through Sleepers Line Plans Between Cities

A through sleepers line will connect Savannah to Birmingham via Macon, with joint operation by Central of Georgia and Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf between Florida and Kansas City. Completion hinges on the Columbus to Americus, Georgia link, with Americus to Buena Vista being relaid with 63-pound steel and Columbus to Americus nearing completion within a month.

Senior Thompson has built a strong fruit reputation and retires with a comfortable income, while his sons will benefit from the seeds already sown and pursue a harvest of profits.

Vince Jackson a prominent colored man of Americus died Tuesday night at his residence on College Hill of pneumonia. He worked for a number of years as a cotton sampler for various warehouses in the area and bore a good reputation.

In Schley County a black man and his lover faced parental opposition to their match. They eloped last Thursday night with aid from a white man named Geo Jones. The couple fled to Justice C. C. Tracy's home where the union was solemnized, witnesses noting the discreet night setting.

Hoo Doo Scheme Brings Angry Return of Alledged Healer

An old man named Grant exploited several Black women in Americas by claiming hoo doo knowledge. He deceived Glover by giving herbs to mix into her husband Mose’s coffee. Mose confronted Grant, who refunded $1.50 and warned he would be barred from the premises if seen again.

Legislature Extends Railroad Commission Notices

At the late session an act approved by the Governor adds Americus and Athens to cities where Railroad Commission circulars and orders must be published. Americus, home of the agitation leading to the Commission, saw a late recognition of its efforts to protect Georgia people from railroad monopoly.

State court fines for three county cases

In county court before Judge Pilabury on Friday three defendants were found guilty. Herman Dawson, a colored man, charged with assault on Bob Turner, was fined four months on the chain gang or $25.00. Austin Nelma, known as Chick, charged with stabbing, was fined six months on the chain gang or $40.00. Ike Johnson, a colored man, charged with larceny from the house, was fined six months on the chain gang or $20.00. Court adjourned.

Technological School at Atlanta Seeks Georgia Boys

Captain Lyman Hall of the State Technological School in Atlanta discusses the new school opened last fall. It enrolls 115 scholars from about fifty counties, with a capacity of 170, admission costing 20 dollars yearly plus a 5 dollar damage deposit. The four year program emphasizes practical mechanics and shop work, with sections rotating in the shops and a junior option for advanced students. Board ranges from 12 to 20 dollars monthly. The aim is to prepare boys for mills and factories in Georgia.
