Putnam Georgia 1887 community prospect and notes
From Putnam Georgia in February 1887 a long Innsworth style update describes Putnam as a small station on the Buena Vista and Eilaville Railroad twenty miles west of Andersonville and seven miles east of Buena Vista in Marion County. It notes about twenty five inhabitants a post office express office general store and a high school. The piece highlights nearby forests and Uchees hardwoods used for fine furniture and invites northern southern eastern and western settlers for a healthy hospitable climate. It mentions oats growing gardens planted, Mrs. W. O. Singleton visiting, M. E. Collum recovering from a foot injury, Miss Atta Liasa Stevens teaching Putnam school, Rev. Hayes preaching at the schoolhouse, and farmers considering tobacco cultivation. A local tale of a negro boy with arms off charming Carrollton with his chesslike freech harp music is included.
