First Watermelon Shipments From Wilmington Island Spark Georgia Growers
Dr A Oemler of Savannah explains Georgia led the South in early melon shipments to the North starting in 1852. He cites Barstow, Gibson, Pritchard and others on Wilmington, Skidaway and Whitmorsh islands, notes high profits and shipboard protection schemes, and traces later expansion to Charleston Burke and Richmond counties and Valdosta area. He recalls varieties such as rattlesnake and Cuban queen, and highlights the growing railroad and steamer role in the industry. A separate Carroll County land tract near the Alabama line attracts buyers amid unrecorded ownership and a possible gold discovery. The State Secretary plans sale by public outcry, as land values and speculation rise.
