Dawson Watchman and Times a Glimpse of 1860s Era
In Dawson in 1859 1860 local newspapers were scarce so Misses Bid and Ann Walker issued a manuscript called the Dawson News and later the Dawson Times. A short lived Dawson Watchman dated July 4 1860 circulated among locals with local names, love letters and a continuation story. The note recalls county figures like Wm C Thornton sheriff and lists early settlers, plus a sharp political poem about Breckinridge and Lane. Cotton comes in with two bales July 2 1860. local obituaries and social notes follow with visits, marriages, and forthcoming nuptials.
