Military courts are probing Ku Klux Klan activity in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, with extended military rule across the state. Governor Walton travels to Henrietta to address the state labor convention as Tulsa police oversight shifts between military and civilian control.
Martial law in Oklahoma City tightens city controls with orders from Lieut. Col. W. S. Key. Midnight to 5 am curfews restrict travel and passes required for essential workers. Firearms sale banned and public assemblies opposing martial law forbidden.
Senator W. J. Harris will visit Sparta for his first address since election and speak to Sparta citizens and Hancock County. He will discuss current congressional legislation and address rural credits and federal reserve banks.
Atlanta Sept 17 The state highway department announces contracts totaling 50000 for road construction in Rabun Richmond and Banks counties. John N. Holder, chairman of the highway commission, says work is now under way across the three counties.
Authorities believe a four month old girl who died from malnutrition in a Morgantown hospital Sunday night is the missing New York infant Lillian McKenzie. The infant was left at the hospital Saturday by a couple traveling in an automobile home with a New York license plate.
Cotton ginnings in Sumter county up to Sept 1 totaled 783 bales, reports W P Persons, resident census agent. The period shows a drop of nearly 5 000 bales from the previous season, with 1923 crop figures below 1922 by 4 901 bales.
Chicago September 17 The week started Sunday as Constitution Week observed nationwide by the Citizenship Committee of the American Bar Association. The program aims to re establish the constitution and the ideals of government in the minds of the people. Local organizations will conduct programs with the bar association providing a general outline. Cooperation from civic groups was sought and promised in many cases.
Atlanta on September 24 the Uncle Remus association will hold a tag day to raise five thousand dollars to buy Snap Bean Farm, made famous by Joel Chandler Harris. Roses will be sold in place of ordinary tags to support the effort aimed at converting the farm into a children’s playground.
A Louisville and Nashville freight train crashed into an Atlanta and St Andrews Bay excursion train at Cottondale Florida late last night killing one person and injuring more than twenty. The injured were brought to Dothan and Mariana hospitals with several in serious condition.
Washington September 17 Physicians who examined John R H Bartlett first assistant post master general and former governor of New Hampshire said his injuries after a car was struck by a street car are not serious The automobile was wrecked and Bartletts chauffeur was slightly hurt
Macon Sept 17 There will be a breathing spell in the floggers case trial before the City Court as Solicitor Roy Moore shifts focus to other docket items. No flogging case will be nolle pressed. Six defendants including J P Durkee organizer of the Ku Klux Klan in Macon face charges, with evidence being prepared for presentation this week.
Jack Williams of the Waycross Journal-Herald spoke to the Eleventh District Press Association urging Georgia editors to lead progressive farming efforts. He urged a districtwide, single focused program, starting with dairy cows and expanding to hogs and hens, noting cold storage or meat curing facilities could follow under cooperative efforts.
Dublin Sept 17 President Chas Molony of the Wrightsville and Tennille railroad estimates Laurens county will yield about 16 000 bales of cotton this year based on careful observation and reports. He cites many fields white with open bolls and provides county totals including Washington 6 500 bales Johnson 5 500 Bates Laurens op 16 000 Bleckley 83 500 Palak 3 500 and a statewide sum near 45 000 bales.
Nine aliens held for deportation escaped from the comity jail in Crookston Minnesota by unlocking their cage doors from inside and using a window exit. The bars were saved. A general alarm went out but authorities believed they left town aboard an early morning train.
Fire crews battled three fires in unused flues over three days causing estimated damage of 30 dollars. Incidents included a kitchen flue blaze at W R Walker residence on West Chuck Street, a tenement fire at Matt Hart estate on Krampton Street, and a mattress renovating plant fire at Ford Jones on Cotton Avenue. Officials urge careful use of unused fireplaces and fall roof fire precautions.
A delegation of Macon county business men and farmers plans a study trip to Turner county to learn the Turner county cow hog and hen program of farm diversification. J. H. Westbury of Sylvester presented the plan to the Montezuma Kiwanis Club, which sponsors the trip.
Charles McKinnon Boifeuillet, former Macon banker and brother of John T Boise Net, a state health service member, died at a local hospital in Atlanta. He was 57 and had suffered with ill health for some time.
Aaron Wilkinson, described as a negro, is jailed on a distilling liquor charge. Sheriff Harvey holds a still and beer seized at Mee t Veal farm in the Twenty-eighth district. Wilkinson, an old offender, was out on bond for a prior distilling case and now faces trial at the next Sumter May term after recent continuances due to illness.
Columbus report states W. W. McKenzie was removed from the Muscogee county jury commission and P. H. Burrus named to fill the unexpired term until June 17, 1926. The order cites unsuitability, noting the commission had drawn only about 150 men for the grand jury.
A Franco Spanish frontier border report says a military directorate formed after last week’s revolution will expel thirty one leading politicians including former premier Sanchez Guerra and other prominent liberals. Expulsions will take place this week.
Atlanta September 17 Preparations for tomorrow’s opening of a special legislative investigation into the Georgia Department of Agriculture are under way. Commissioner J J Brown defends the department against charges of running a political machine and wasting public funds. Sam Olive has been engaged to represent the department. Representative Stewart led the push for inquiry and threatened impeachment if it did not occur. Supporters say Stewart will attend the hearing tomorrow.
Figures from the Central of Georgia Railroad show 197,680 people traveled to Tybee for the 1923 season ending Labor Day, down 23,451 from 1922. Officials say the new Tybee road construction is responsible for the drop.
In Atlanta on September 17 a man shot and killed near Peachtree Street by two Black highwaymen has been identified as L. A. Hamilton, said to be an oil broker who recently arrived in the city. He warned a soft drink shop proprietor of lurking highwaymen before the ambush.
In Sorau Brandenburg Germany a food price protest turned deadly as clashes erupted between police and demonstrators. Central News Dispatch from Berlin reports twelve people killed and fifteen injured during the confrontation today in the province’s capital region.
October trade in New York saw cotton rise 135 points from 27.90 to 29.25 as a storm across Oklahoma damaged thousands of bales and supply fears boosted prices. Spot prices advanced with tighter carry and growers holding bales, while middling cash deals near 28 3 4 cents.
Savannah claims the honor of being the first city in the state to complete its relief quota for Japanese earthquake sufferers. Contributions continued to pour in, raising the total to nearly $5,000 after an initial $3,000 quota was met. A telegram from Joseph C. Logan of the American Red Cross urged a continued push as the need remains great.
President Calvin Coolidge will not visit Macon this year. A letter from the chamber of commerce inviting him was acknowledged by C B Slempe secretary to the president who cited pressing matters of state requiring his stay in Washington.
The Macon Lions club began plans for an inter civic golf tournament to be discussed with other Macon civic organizations. If favored, a rules committee will be formed to establish contest rules. The proposal appears likely to gain support.
