A Johnson's Chill and Fever Tonic advertisement extols the tonic as a cure for fatigue and fever, claiming it restores vitality and liver health. Testimonial from J. R. Lassiter of Hendersonville, dated Sept 2, 1896, recounts founder relief for malarial work forces and sustained use thereafter.
Labor Day celebrations in Atlanta featured a full schedule of day and night events. A large barbecue fed the crowd as horse races bicycle races automobile race and foot races filled the day on the race track and Coliseum venue under skilled officials. Gompers in New Orleans Atlanta and other cities noted in the observance with varied demonstrations on September 1.
Labor Day observance in Louisville and Kentucky surpassed prior years with Gov Backham declaring a holiday. A large parade drew participation from nearly every Louisville labor union and a Phoenix Hill park mass meeting and picnic was planned. Gompers reviewed New Orleans parade for AFL as banks and businesses closed. Chicago also saw many firms idle as workers joined a street parade with a flag bearing support for striking miners.

An excursion train on the Southern Railway derailed on a high embankment near Berry Alabama killing 30 and injuring 81. Most victims were African American passengers traveling from Mississippi, with several white railway officials among the few dead. Rescue efforts mobilized from Columbus Mississippi and Birmingham Alabama as bodies were prepared for burial.
An eastbound Rock Island cattle train and an engine and caboose collided head on near Birmingham Missouri ten miles from Kansas City at night. Four trainmen were killed and three injured. Names listed include engineers James Epever and Thomas Criffith and conductor Clarence Mabe Cc. Injured include R Q Giyon Temen.
Alfred Cohan, a Black man, is arrested near Marietta by Sheriff Moss and Railroad Detective Haynie in connection with a wrecking of a Southern train at Harbin's last week. Cohan previously served a year for forgery in Greenville area, jailed there last year. President Darby of the Southern Railway Machinists Union says wage scale talks followed a Washington trip.
The Ohio Democratic convention opened with Mayor Tom L Johnson viewed as a leading presidential hopeful. Supporters pressed to elevate his role, aiming to shape state and national tickets in 1904 and 1908, while opponents warned of accountability for party fortunes. Leaders gathered in Sandusky as delegates prepared to report to the convention the next morning. Oil wells in Somerset show abrupt saltwater yield after two weeks of steady oil output. In Cedar Point, Judge Michael Connelly and Rev Herbert Bigelow received nominations for supreme court judge and secretary of state respectively.
Bramwell W Va Sept 2. The Pocahontas Cob Heries mines are ablaze after strikers set portions of the mine near the west entrance on the Virginia side on fire. Guards and strikers exchanged volleys. no confirmed deaths yet. Governor to be asked to deploy troops to Pocahontas.
Manny Price and Bob Scruggs were lynched about 6:30 pm near Newberry Florida by a mob of about 300 men while en route to Gainesville. Price confessed to killing W F Brunson, superintendent at the nearby Buttrerenback mines, and implicated Scruggs who had been held on weapons charges. The bodies were left on a tree, riddled with bullets.
Indianapolis dispatch says novelist Edward Eggleston author of The Hoosier Schoolmaster died last night at Lake George Madison County died Sept 3 with reports from The News. Eggleston was a noted American writer born in Indiana and linked to the Hoosier school narrative.
