John Knuckle shot his bride of two months as she slept in their Plainfield home at 6 AM after she questioned his past. He then shot himself and lies near death at Muhlenberg Hospital while his wife recovers. Knuckle, a newcomer and florist, had married the widow of John Childs in July at 24 Clinton avenue. The woman had learned he used the name Smith and had a daughter in New York. The motive cited was her inquiries about his past.
