Woman Leaps to Death From Washington Monument

The mangled body of a young woman was found at the base of the Washington Monument on Mount Vernon Place after she threw herself from the 155 foot shaft. A witness on the monument reported she approached the top and spoke briefly before jumping. Authorities presume deliberate self destruction and are investigating the circumstances.

Immense Louisiana orange crop drives hopes higher

Louisiana orange crop, mainly in Plaquemines Parish near New Orleans, is immense and nearing ripening. Trees are heavily laden and require props. Harvest to finish by end of October. crop largely sold on the tree “in the bud.” Values reach over $1,500 per acre with yields of $150 to $250 per acre plausible.

Woodshanty bear slain by woodsman in self defense

In Peck's Hill area, Mason and his sons found a bear raiding their chestnut shanty. Mason, armed with a sharp drawing knife, wrestled the bear, slashed its snout, severed its windpipe, and killed it. By noon they dragged the carcass from the shanty, weighed 13 pounds, and skinned the animal.
