Woman leaps to death from Washington Monument

The mangled remains of a young woman were found at the base of the Washington Monument on Mount Vernon Place. She apparently came to the top with intent to die, as witnesses recall her speaking briefly before throwing herself 155 feet to the ground.

Immense Louisiana orange crop near harvest

The Louisiana orange crop, mainly in Plaquemines Parish below New Orleans, is enormous and nearing ripeness. Trees are heavily laden, with branches propped to prevent breakage. Picked by end of October, the crop faces little danger of frost, and groves are valued at $1,500 per acre. The industry dates a century, with most fruit sold on the tree in the bud.
