Mania Oct. 9 General Smith sailed from here to relieve the island of Samar and command Samar and Leyte to enable General Hughes to focus on Cebu. He is accompanied by a battalion of the Seventh Infantry seeking to avenge actions against Company C of the Ninth Infantry. Further reports from Samar describe awful indignities inflicted on dead bodies.
Campaigns for and against the proposed Alabama constitution open in earnest with Oscar W Underwood directing ratification and General Charles M Shelley leading the opposition from Biruixenay. Allies include former Governor Johnston. supporters see growing belief the new constitution improves on the old, especially among white counties. Also notes a robbery at Bonair and a cotton market rise in Experton with higher prices and better grades.

A separate report from Madison Georgia notes a Central railroad crash injuring Conductor Cox and killing two horses after an engine lost water and collided with freight cars.

In Gronogrows Kentucky on October 9 the Commonwealth resumes Caleb Powers trial calling thirty new witnesses not testifying in the first trial. Among new Commonwealth witnesses are ex Governor W O Ayton John H Wilson Dr O G Cecil and William Parley. The defense adds about ten new witnesses including General Basil Duke and Judge Clifton J Hiatt as former attorney general notes.
