A vintage advertisement urges readers to treat malaria poisoning with Johnson's Tonic claiming rapid cure and greater effectiveness than quinine. It stresses blood health, productivity, dealer profit, and travel to obtain the medicine, presenting the tonic as the world’s greatest remedy.
Shelbyville Kentucky October 2 Jimbo Fields 16 and Clarence Garnett two negroes were lynched at 2 am after their alleged murder of Will O Hart a printer. Mob seized jail keys battered doors and moved prisoners to a nearby trestle within 500 yards of the jail. Hart had come from Lebanon Ohio and worked for the Shelbyville Sentinel.
Dureau Natal Sept 30 A force of 1600 Boers under General Botha attacked Portitala on the Zululand border on Sept 24. The engagement lasted all day with heavy garrison losses: one officer and 11 men killed, five officers and 38 men wounded, 63 missing, many believed killed or wounded. Commandant Opperman and 19 burghers killed.
The Tradesman lists numerous new ventures for the week ended Sept. 28, including a $35,500 brickworks in Tallahassee Florida a $40,500 canning factory in Clellanville South Carolina a $100,000 coal mining firm at Montgomery Alabama a $150,000 coal company at Nashville Tennessee coal mines at Tuscaloosa Alabama and a coffin factory in Maxton North Carolina a cement factory in Wake Forest North Carolina and other plants and mills across Georgia Florida Tennessee and the Carolinas with assorted oil lumber and machinery works while a separate dispatch notes the resignation of Minster Uribe in Bogota and a Herald report from New York.
In San Francisco on October 3 a triennial convocation of Episcopal bishops clergy and laity opened at Trinity Church. Seventy five bishops processed from the guildroom led by Rev. F W Clempett and Bishop Morris of Oregon delivered the convocation sermon. Afternoon sessions organized the two houses for business.
General George M. Sternberg, surgeon general, praised Philippine hospital care and convalescent facilities after returning from the islands. He noted a 7% mortality rate, improvements over the Civil War era, and a near perfect convalescent hospital at Santa Mesa built of nipa. He cited malaria typhoid and dysentery as common illnesses among troops and said plague was not widespread. General Weston reported the commissary department downsized to 15 officers, concentrates on supplies, and a reduced army on Luzon.
Atlanta reports the Soldiers' Home reduced to ruins after a blaze started in the garbage plant at 8 15 am. The fire, aided by inadequate water, destroyed the building in about 20 minutes. 75 inmates were evacuated with no confirmed deaths. The home, insured for 10 000 dollars and valued at about 10 000 dollars, will be rebuilt by popular subscription.
In Jacksonville on September 30 rumors of a Fernandina trade ended with closure. The Florida Town property, about one third of Fernandina including water front and docks, transferred to W Hoyt as trustee for a local syndicate. Purchasers aim to stabilize litigation and improve the town. Names include F W Hoyt J Mizell William Mizell S A Swann W E Page and J Prescott. A separate drowning report notes 12 year old Sam Deitch drowned in the Ogeechee Canal while playing near Mar garet Street.
Exoxviriz reports on October 1 that George Sanders, Will Sanders, Bob Sanders, and John Sanders were found guilty of murdering John Mitchell in Obillioweek during the night of July 2. The trial highlighted the men as a family group implicated in the fatal incident.
