Lexington Ky Oct 2 R C O Benjamin negro author attorney and editor was killed by Michael Monahan following a quarrel over a negro voter registration He led The Standards journal and had recently appeared as attorney for Tallow Dick Combs in the Goebel murder case He authored books including a West Indies history The Boy Doctor Ethnology or Origin of the Races and The Southland He was about 40 and had lived in Lexington about 15 years.
Verourca Alabama October 3 a mob burned Winfield Townsend alias Floyd at Eclectic for an attempted assault on Mrs Lonnie Harrington. Townsend confessed implicating seven other African Americans in a conspiracy to ravish white women, with Virgil Miller later arrested for safekeeping.

SHewanpon, Pa Oct 3 The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company posted notices offering a 10 percent wage increase from Oct 1 and inviting grievance talks. Local organizers urged caution, while violence occurred with a dynamite attempt on Michael Zulick’s house and two marches aimed at stopping mine work. President Mitchell disputed union delegates’ election in Shenandoah as a misstep or contingency for a possible convention.
Many join the strikers as mine washers meet at Tremont and several collieries in the Philadelphia and Reading system suspend work. Good Spring and Woodside shut down. Lincoln colliery south of Brookside operates with about 900 workers while North Franklin at Treverton and others remain idled. Notices for a 10 percent wage increase meet no response from miners. only four of 39 Reading collieries work. A large miners meeting is planned at Lansford with attendees from Hastiton area to discuss the strike.
