In St. Louis Roosevelt declared the United States must enlarge and modernize its navy or lose national prestige. He linked canal completion to naval power, urged federal rail oversight, and praised broad public support across party lines amid massive crowds and enthusiastic receptions.
The market slid a quarter cent despite bullish bureau and government condition data. Cotton ginned totals to Oct 1 show 1,994,230 bales this season versus 2,040,000 last year, signaling a 45,000 bale shortfall. Prices in Americus fell to 11 to 11 1-9 cents after the bureau reading.
Funeral services for Mr George A Herndon were conducted Monday at the Lamar street residence by Rev R L Bivins and two other ministers. He died Sunday morning at 7 30 o'clock at his son in law John T Bragg's home after long illness. He was about seventy, survived by three daughters and son Frank Herndon of Columbus. A Confederate veteran, he lived many years in Sumter county and with his wife Miss Matthews sister of Mrs C A D Hawkins of Amehcus. Camp Sumter members attended the rites.
