Rescue chief Rear Admiral H H Christy reports two floating cranes failed to raise the submarine Rome victim from the wreck scene. Divers report engine room and compartments flooded as operation continues near New London on October 2.
On the U S S Camden at Oct 2 divers recovered the bodies of Walter F Lawton electrician mate first class and E D Lindsay engineman second class from the submerged submarine S 51 engine room. The S 51 remains buried in sand as divers probe the adjoining motor compartment for further casualties or survivors.
By special permission of the President the U S Navy Band will give two concerts in Americus this fall. Negotiations began after summer and citizens urged the appearance. The band will be heard Monday November 23 at the Rylander Theatre with W L Radcliffe coordinating the tour efforts and noting many refusals to extend appearances.
Washington October 4 Commander John Rodgers challenged anyone to offer a just criticism of the arrangements for the Hawaiian flight of the PN 9 number one seaplane. Disciplinary action against Col William A Mitchell will be renewed by the War Department once his testimony before the air board concludes within a day or two.
Police hunted Thursday and Friday for two Black men after they swindled Greeley Jerkins of 105 dollars. He had just earned 105 for cotton and agreed to buy a Ford for 150, leaving 105 as part payment while promising to raise 45 by October 10. The men fled with both the car and the money after Jerkins returned with extra funds. He trusted the attackers, described as well dressed and courteous.
D. R. Andrews was awarded the contract to outfit the city police and fire departments with winter uniforms. The deal covers 11 fire fighter uniforms and eight police, plus city marshal uniforms and overcoats for both departments. Cloth color and texture remain the same as last year.
Approximately $50,000 in mail loot allegedly stolen from the United States Mail in LoCledo Missouri was recovered by postal inspectors. Mary I Elsberry, a Negro, was arrested and scheduled for a preliminary hearing on October 9. The recovered amount is only a fraction of the total loss.

The Lee Street eleven defeated Harrold Avenue 14 to 7 in the first inter street football clash of the season at Playground grid. Billy Fort and Phillip Curtis scored for Lee Street, Chas Howard scored for Harrold Avenue, with Walker and Wagnon shining in the Lee Street backfield.

Joseph D. Stokes, 25, fled capture for forgery after being cornered by a detective agency in Richmond. He jumped twelve stories from a plate glass window in the Mutual Building upon being questioned, dying instantly. He had been sought for three months by local police and was believed to be wanted in Norfolk. He had been estranged from his family and was taken to the detectives after admitting several forgeries.
County health board officials plan farm visits to administer typhoid serum to gatherings of 25 or more, with two to three engagements possible next week. Dr Chambliss reports no malaria in the county and one diphtheria case, noting typhoid controlled and vaccination surging recently. The health department cites federal reports for authority.
Paris October 2 A possible romance links Mrs Woodrow Wilson and Dr Sterling Ruffin of Washington D C. The speculation has filled Geneva and Paris in recent weeks. Mrs Wilson is visiting friends while Dr Ruffin traveled on the Majestic, which sailed to New York on September 23.
A lone bandit robbed two Pullmans and the observation car of a Union Pacific train near Omaha, while a Black porter collected money under threat of a revolver. The bandit was shot in the head and leg by a special agent as he fled toward the city, likely fatally wounded.
New York October 2 Marjorie Rambeau the noted actress spent Thursday with her lawyers then again denied stealing the love of English actor Kevin Manton. She labelled the charges a malicious fabrication and indicated possible legal action against those spreading the story as she vowed to prove her innocence.
Atlanta October 2 J H Hunter a young man arrested by city detectives in connection with the theft of an automobile in Macon claimed this morning he figured in the theft of more than 500 automobiles in various parts of the country His remarks were made to investigators detailing alleged widespread involvement in auto theft cases across the nation.
