Sumter county ginning statistics released by W T Persons census representative show a crop reduction due to boll weevil and other causes. Up to October 18 figures report 18 581 bales from the 1917 crop versus 26 349 bales by the same date last year, a drop of 7 769 bales. The loss is chiefly attributed to boll weevil damage.
Atlanta Ga November 7 Convicts at the city stockade are not strong at sidewalk paving but they show value as laborers. Turnips weighing eleven pounds are displayed in a front of city hall exhibit with a card from the mayor praising the prisoners for their productive food work.
Mr Frank Lanier president of the Americas Grocery Company returned from Washington where he met Herbert Hoover to discuss wholesale and retailer licensing under the national food administration. Railroads operating in eastern states applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for authority to increase freight rates on sugar by about twenty percent. Atlanta Nov. 7 Georgia food administration reports prompt completion of pledge signings by housewives. Major D P McClatchey orders county chairmen to collect signed cards and forward totals to Atlanta for final reports to Washington. Georgia leads the South in pledges though many women have not yet signed due to concerns.
