Porter Sentenced for Auto Theft Across Four Counties
Chris Porter, a young Americus negro auto thief, pleads guilty in Superior court to two indictments for stealing cars from A Gohen and Frank Harrold. A white man about 36 years old gave the name Tom Hurley and alias J. J. Bartlett is jailed in Sumter county charged with stealing a watch from Sam Coney in Windsor hotel room. He was nabbed in Savannah at a pawn show after pledging the watch for 25 dollars under Bartlett. He claimed he bought it here from an unknown man for 10 dollars. Chief Bragg led to the arrest and a Jacksonville doctor’s letter calls Hurley a doper with a bad record.

Atlanta May 25 The Georgia Court of Appeals sustained life insurance clauses that declare policies void if the insured dies by his own action within two years of issue. Two carloads of hogs totaling 157 head sold at Leslie for 110 per hundredweight, bringing $2,830.05. Buyer was W. L. Hollis of Buena Vista. A carload of Sumter county Duree barrows will be fed out by the state college of agriculture for show purposes at the fairs this fall. Jule G. Liddell of the state college bought 60 head of pigs, all first class stock though not pedigreed, shipped to Athens for test handling. First call prices were paid. About ten more will be sent to reach a surplus so the herd can be culled to the choicest in the fall. They will be fed on corn tankage alfalfa pasture and buttermilk. Sumter county was chosen for its reputation for good stock and the ability to obtain quality stock near at hand.

Today anniversary marks first Atlantic steamer City of Savannah
In Atlanta on May 25 1819 the City of Savannah became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. It sailed fifty five days later returning with a world record trans Atlantic voyage. Savannah’s claim to fame began with a shipbuilding charter granted in 1819 and the original charter sits with Dr L L Knight Georgia state historian. President Monroe attended the ship’s early trials and harbor voyage.
