London May 22 Stanley Baldwin accepted the premiership offered by King George. His rapid rise in politics surprised many as Lord Curzon, once seen as near-certain successor to Bonar Law, faced disappointment two days ago.
The Kiwanis club scheduled its Wednesday noon luncheon at 12 15 in the Windsor hotel dining room instead of Friday to accommodate the visit of the State County Commissioners. Members planned an earlier meeting to welcome the visitors and make the convention both pleasurable and profitable for the city.
J E Hightower chair of the automobile committee announced rules for cars used for guests at the County Officers Convention. Cars will line up on Jackson and Lamar streets with cardboard numbers starting at 1. Drivers should stay in position, keep 10 to 15 yards apart, and not exceed 25 mph with signals from the pilot car.
Captain Justice of the Waycross police captured Gus Brown a 40 year old man described as insane and confined him on Albany avenue. Sheriff Sweat to hold Brown for a lunacy trial after Brown disrupted residents while allegedly believing himself a minister and preaching in a wild incoherent manner.
Floyd county cotton acreage appears not seriously reduced by bad weather, says Farm Demonstration Agent Collins. A few farmers admit shortfalls, but most deny delaying planned plantings, insisting the other fellow has not planted as much.
H Wittinghof of Stone and Webster, Boston offices, arrived in Columbus to study the water gas machinery being installed at local plants. The outfit aims to boost Columbus gas production during development and should be completed by mid or early next month.
Shanghai May 22 The zero hour for the Suchow bandits passed without any executions announced by the gang. Government troops withdraw as the bandits had demanded. The nearest soldiers to the stronghold are six miles away as negotiations continue.
May 22 report from Tientsin says Beijing's talks with bandits over the release of captives in Shantung's Padsuku mountain reach a complete deadlock. Captives are described as held under terrible conditions at the mountain summit.
Americus Odd Fellows and Rebekahs will be well represented at the 80th Georgia Grand Lodge session in Macon with delegates from Sumter Lodge 264 including S H Edge G E House J C Pouncey and Mrs S H Edge state Rebekah president Mrs Fannie Crabb Ella Cameron and Mrs E B Banks. The gathering marks the Grand Lodge Grand Encampment and Rebekah sessions with Mr House attending both ad tallies and a Rebekah degree contest planned for this evening and a six lodge degree contest on Wednesday at the Grand Theater. James Perry railroad commissioner of Atlanta serves as grand master and C A Fretwell of Fitzgerald is grand patriarch. Mrs S H Edge presides over the Rebekah Assembly.
Prof C M Hale, principal of Americus High School, has received his life teachers certificate from Prof M M Park, state school superintendent at Atlanta. The engraved document allows him to teach in Georgia schools for the rest of his life without examination, granted only to graduates of a standard college with ten years or more of teaching and exemplary character.

Helen A. Coates' $50,000 breach of promise case against James F. DeJournette is scheduled for trial in federal district court in Rome this week. Attorneys for the plaintiff may seek a continuance, while the defense plans a vigorous opposition. The suit drew state wide attention when filed and is expected to again as it reaches trial. The plaintiff furnished newspapers with letters she claimed were from DeJournette, which were published under prominent headlines.
Athens May 22 An estimated 100000 Georgians have left farms since January 1 with the majority being black citizens and more than 18000 whites also abandoning farming The figures were compiled by county agents at the Georgia State College of Agriculture and released to the press by Dr Andrew M Soule president of the college
May 22. The Waycross Golf Club received an invitation from Bainbridge to send some players for inter-club games between Bainbridge and Waycross clubs. The invitation came via P. R. Bomeister, a member of both clubs. President P. A. Hay has not yet named players for the trip.
Dan Lott, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce sub committee, calls a meeting for next Monday at 8 p.m. at the Chamber to add names of all who pledged houses for the construction of more homes in Waycross.
In Rome on May 22 a special Floyd County Poultry Association meeting at the Chamber of Commerce approved a constitution and laws prepared by a special committee. The group endorsed a cooperative poultry sale planned for June and appointed a committee to organize the event.
The Darlington school's camping trip, planned for Wednesday to Friday last week, was postponed to the latter part of this week due to high water and rain. Camp will be pitched on Ship Island about thirty miles up the Oostanaula River from Rome.
Atlanta May 22 The Georgia Supreme Court ruled that household furniture cannot be confiscated as part of an illicit distilling operation in the W. B. Little case from McIntosh County. The decision centers on prohibition law and the treatment of ordinary home items in enforcement actions.
Atlanta May 22 Governor-elect Walker said he would call an extra session if the legislature fails to pass constructive tax reform during the regular session. He argued for a more even burden distribution and announced his study of tax systems in other states during a trip to the East.
A new Calvary Baptist church was organized at Gilchrist Park in Waycross by Baptists who met in the abandoned United Brethren building. Rev. M. A. Grace was elected moderator with O. E. Davis as clerk. Members admitted included John Scott and others in a small roster.
In Montreat North Carolina on May 22 the Presbytery of St Johns Florida faced disapproval for proposing that at least one woman be placed on each executive committee. The General Assembly concluded with San Antonio Texas chosen as the next meeting site.

News from Athens reports Turkish forces blew up a bridge over the Marietta river linking Adrianople and Karagath. The incident caused consternation in the Greek capital.
May 22 Waycross authorities sweep the city for unpaid street tax this year. Recorder Jerome Crawley lists summoned delinquents after weekly court, with police collecting $4 tax and $1 delinquent fee or ordering court. Last week about 70 men were jailed for nonpayment. they have since paid.

Miss Elizabeth Smith, Americus High School student, won the Lions Club medal in a school auditorium recital last night reciting The Anarchist with notable talent. She praised the club during today’s luncheon for the earlier performance and again delivered the piece charmfully.
Miss Frances Edwards escaped serious injury when her car rolled onto its side on the National Highway near Oak Street road in Valdosta. She swerved to avoid a dog that crossed the road, suffering lacerated fingers and being badly shaken by the crash.

Valdosta May 22 Declaring his aim to introduce a sales tax on soft drinks Stanford representative elect from Lowndes county says funds would pay Confederate veterans pensions and provide free school books for Georgia children He seeks revenue first to honor veterans then to fund free text books with any surplus gained to aid children and asks for support from United Daughters of the Confederacy and patriotic groups noting praise from the United Confederate Veterans commander for honoring Dixie defenders.
Columbus May 22 Three cars are all that can be obtained for the Columbus delegation to the Shrine convention in Washington in early June, says S C Harris district freight agent of Central of Georgia. Two cars already reserved and others are booking the third. A reported shortage of 500 cars for the convention is cited to justify the limited Columbus quota.
Rome May 22 Youngblood pleaded guilty on a charge of making liquor when arraigned before U S Commissioner John C Printup. He was captured operating a 40 gallon still with 12 gallons of whisky and about 100 gallons of beer. The equipment was destroyed and bond set at 300 dollars. Despite losing both hands, Youngblood made pure corn liquor.
In Columbus on May 22 the mercantile department reports progress on circulating the Thursday afternoon closing referendum. Officials of the Chamber of Commerce are hopeful most merchants will be seen by tonight, covering the June July and August period.
In Jersey City on May 22 two policemen were killed and two wounded when a gun battle erupted as officers attempted to arrest Frank Sage at his residence. Sage and a woman companion were driven from the house with gas bombs after reserves entered. Detective Sergeant Black Patrolman Ware died. Lieutenant Otis and Detective Walton were injured. Six officers pursued Sage and the woman, then reserves routed them after heavy fire from a second floor.
