May 7 dispatches describe a cyclone hitting Garza Texas with half the town’s houses blown down including a Baptist church and a store. People sought storm shelters as winds damaged Broad areas from Galveston to San Antonio with telegraph service interrupted and widespread property damage reported.
Troops under Lord Roberts press toward Pretoria as General Hamilton captures Winburg and links with rail lines north of Vet River. British advance described as rapid and machine-like with ongoing operations and limited Boer resistance. Casualties reported, with prisoners and wounded noted as forces move toward Mafeking and other targets.
Admiral and Mrs. Dewey arrived in Memphis with Lieutenants Caldwell and Crawford and were hosted at the Peabody hotel. May 7 report from Phenix City notes Grocer W. T. Gilbert missing after trips to Girard and Columbus. Sheriff closes Columbus store amid a 1900 dollar attachment for J. B. Deaton. The incomplete dispatch mentions unsettled financial issues and neighbor concerns.
A mob of about 18 men, described as hotel workers, gathered near 145 Randolph Street in Av Laxta on May 7 in a threatening search for Charles Cates after he shot and killed Liga Jefferson. Police and Captain Kil responded to the unrest as locals reported the scene late Sunday night.
Dr. L G Broughton denounced Mayor James G Woodward at Tabernacle Baptist Church Sunday night for the second time. The preacher declared there was no longer room for mercy and repeated his earlier charge of drapkenness against the mayor.
Frank Littleton was convicted of murder in the first degree for slain sister-in-law Miss Ells Hodges in Opelika Alabama. The case stemmed from the killing of his wife's sister and the judge deemed the circumstances simple in proving intent.
