Mining Town Wiped Out by Fire in Slocan District

The town of Sandon in the Slocan district burned completely with 1200 homeless and losses quoted at 500000 to 1000000 as the fire spread from Spencer's ball and Brown's store. The miners' hospital, a drug store, and other buildings were destroyed. relief trains carried in supplies. Glasgow Kentucky also suffered a major blaze in the business district with losses around 150000, affecting Raubeld's store and other businesses. Hartsville Tennessee saw the north side burned, costing about 100000 with records destroyed. The Standard Varnish works in Elm Park, New York, suffered 200000 damage. A Morton Manufacturing fertilizer plant outside Washington was burned, with losses about 95000. Minister Wilde presented credentials at the White House.

Women Directors Proposed for Alabama Girls Industrial School

At the Alabama Federation of Woman's Clubs meeting in Buposouau May 6 a report urged women directors for the Alabama Girls Industrial School in Montevallo. The plan called for a $500 scholarship endowment funded by each club and a free scholarship committee to visit the institution, with Mrs G M Cruikshank, Mrs J B Knox, and J A T Goodwyn named to oversee the effort.

Lynching at Douglas Ends in Mob Killing of Jones

In Douglas Georgia Allen Crosby confronted a negro at a turpentine still to arrest him. A quarrel with Marshall Jones followed with both men shooting. West Brown killed Crosby with a pistol. A mob seized Jones at the jail, dragged him out of town and shot him to death, leaving the body.

Governor Wells to Address Nation on Scofield Relief

Governor Wells will issue an address acknowledging United States citizens generous offers for Scofield disaster relief. Night Watchman Kills Himself by Accident in Jail Corridor

In Houstsville Alabama on May 5 Clarence Jamar night watchman died from a bullet to the brain found on a jail bench. The body lay beneath his coat and a pistol lay nearby after an apparent self inflicted shot during the night. Other items mention Philippine operations and a burglary shooting with limited details.

Thoburn Outlines Plan to Raise 100000 Evangelists
