Mrs William C Whitney wife of the former secretary of the wary died near 1 pm in New York after a long illness from a spine injury suffered when thrown from a horse during a visit to Roslyn Long Island. Relatives and intimate friends were summoned to the Whitney home as she had been unconscious since the previous night.
Dr William Whitney Godding 68 died at the government hospital for the insane in Wasmixatox Washington City. He had kidney disease and chronic valvular heart illness as the immediate cause. A renowned physician and alienist, he led the institution since 1877 as its second superintendent.
May 6 report from MasiLa states Major General Lawton's column moved 21 miles north of Balinag with slight resistance encountered. 9,000 rebels entrenched nearby routed, bodies and arms recovered from river. Atlanta May 6 The Third engineers are turning in all equipment except guns bayonets and belts at Fort McPherson to prepare for muster out. The regiment will be mustered out May 17 by War Department orders. The unit is a remarkable cross section with trained tradesmen from across the United States and is expected to yield about $125000 in pay upon discharge, a portion of which Atlanta may receive.
Beasley Graham, a 24 year old Perry county man, was seized from his Hamburg area home and tied to a tree where 160 lashes with hickory switches were applied. He was left severely wounded after expressing support for the slayer of Road Overseer Mullen. A protest by one man kept him from being lynched. He was warned never to show his face again on pain of death.
George Lee, postmaster at Anniston Alabama, arrested by Post Office Inspector J R Rosson on a charge of embezzlement. He posted bond and faces a preliminary hearing May 18 before United States Commissioner G B Randolph. The case concerns about $33 questioned in salary discrepancies for October November and December last year. Lee, from Ohio, allegedly influenced by Ohio interests and not affiliated with Alabama Republicans. Local figures expect prosecution amid convention agitation.
