William Schultz ze 85 year old chief chemist at General Chemical in Jersey City is believed to be suffering a breakdown from overwork. Doctors ordered his removal to a sanitarium after years of relentless study and late nights at home. The strain allegedly caused a mental collapse. In Atlanta on March 26 W R Wells was found guilty of stabbing Frederick Pearce, a blind man, on Decatur Street near police HQ. Judge John B Candler sentenced Wells to be hanged on April 23 between noon and 1 pm. The courtroom was crowded and Wells showed no emotion. An appeal is expected.
Count Matsukita ex premier of Japan and adviser to the emperor arrives in Seattle aboard the Kagu Maru. He says the eight month world trip aims to study economic conditions and notes strong bilateral trade growth with the United States. He hopes for continued amicable ties and reciprocity.
In La Junta Colorado on March 26 a Black Pullman car porter named W H Wallace was fatally harmed by a mob of about 4000 in the courthouse square as his lynching and hanging occurred by an electric light pole. Afterward his body was shot full of bullets as Sheriff Farr had earlier kept him out of town to save him. The mob, angry over an assault on Mrs Henrietta H Miller of Los Angeles, Cal, proceeding from Denver to visit relatives, seized the porter in the Santa Fe yards on a Denver to La Junta run and killed him amid fears of justice.
Dallas is preparing for the national Confederate reunion to be held April 22 with estimates that railroads centering at Dallas will bring no less than 100000 visitors over four days. Montgomery March 24 B J Armistead former tax collector and once wealthiest Alabama man shot and killed Mary Hansen a Negro then died by suicide in a Tallapoosa street house. The tragedy stunned the state as Armistead faced reverses from speculation and had been drinking heavily. He was linked with powerful families and had twice held the tax collector post. Authorities believe temporary insanity played a role.
