Plains March report highlights a newly formed Epworth League at the Methodist church with weekly devotions and a monthly literary meeting. A long and varied program at Miss Ophie Markett’s home featured Longfellow autobiography readings, poems, music, and a guessing contest. Local residents and visitors, including the Evanses relocating from Americus, are noted with multiple social visits and community notices.
In Andersonville Georgia on March 17 Miss Maggie Callen of Central of Georgia spent Sunday with friends in Alabama. Several couples and individuals visited or traveled, including Mr and Mrs James W English to Albany, Mr and Mrs B F Easterlin to Americus for the Wirz monument unveiling discussion, Miss Adella Bryant with Mrs B F Easterlin, and Prof A Clark’s daughter Ona hosted by W R Battle. Clergy Rev Mr Moore preached at the Baptist church amid bad weather. Dr Bell acquired the Oglethorpe division of the telephone system signaling soon direct connections. Numerous guests came and went between Leesburg Buena Vista and Hampton Roads. Carl McDonald returned from furlough. H T Simpson attended lectures in New York. Mrs C G Geneke visiting Ocala.
DeSoto Georgia residents recount a week of hospitality with visitors from Leesburg Americus and Cecil. Mrs W J Sessions returns home from a pleasant stay with relatives in Cecil. Mollie Hill visits her mother Elizabeth Culver while Rev Ferrell of Leslie plans a revival here next week.
Mrs. Rob ert Hill Strange hosted the Thursday Afternoon Club with Miss Myrtice Strange in Ellaville Ga to honor Mrs. Zack Childern of Americus The event featured Forty-two, salad and ices, and coffee in the dining room. Local residents and visitors attended including Miss Lucile Lindsay Miss Julia Peacock and Dr B Te Bridges.
Miss Margaret Burton guest of honor to a Saturday heart-dice party hosted by the Hooligans club in Smithville. Nell McKenney won the fruit prize watercolor. Annie Randall earned the consolation. Alice Melton of Dawson honored guest received a hand-embroidered centerpiece. Out of town guests included Pearl Melton of Dawson and Belle McMichael of Buena Vista.
Norman Kemp visiting Dr. A. J. Kemp preached a very impressive sermon at the Leslie Methodist church on Wednesday evening. Locals report various social visits with Mrs. Crisp Wilkinson in Americus, Ruth Wilson returning from Andrew, Blanche Pryor from Smithville, and Mrs. Hugh Ferguson with Mrs. R. E. Howe from DeSoto. Mrs. F. G. Janes hosted visitors while C. E. Lockett traveled to Florida on business. Leslie High School plans an entertainment Friday night as farmers report corn up and growing well.
Cobb Georgia reports mention C R Malone journeying to Cordele for business, R N Pursley and W H Howard traveling to Americus, W H Statham visiting locals, S E Statham and W J Hill making trips to Americus and Macon, Bessie Pursley accompanying to Americus, and Furlow Moreland with McAfee a brief visit. A carload of corn arrived Monday and Tuesday.
The article notes abundant egg supplies and falling prices. A local dealer, Me ZT Anglin, recently sold thirteen hundred dozen eggs at 15 cents each and reported being sold out. Messages indicate heavy shipments maintaining high stock.
Preston Georgia residents held a large consolation shoot on Friday with all participants content with their luck. Local social notes mention visitors from Richland and Fitzgerald, millinery plans, and several residents returning from travels and visits in nearby towns.
Americus is larger than Claxton but Claxton shows hustle with a planned cotton mill valued at 100000. An option on about forty acres in West Claxton between the Seaboard Air Line and R and G railways has been secured for the factory site. North Georgia capitalists are backing the project and promoters are to arrive soon to finalize the deal.
At prevailing prices nine cents, cotton stocks in Americus warehouses are greatly depleted and little is now on the local market. Similar conditions are seen in surrounding towns as reports from the Americus territory indicate cotton has been sold up closer this year. A few independent farmers hold small bales, but generally there is very little left in the country.
Cashier R E McNulty of Commercial City Bank is named the government disbursing agent in Americus for construction funds. About 55000 dollars of Uncle Sam's money are authorized for payment toward the federal post police building, with bond required and bond filed Tuesday.
Sumter County commissioners advance road improvement by adding forty to fifty mules and camp outfits as thirty felons join the force on April 1. Purchases from Cruger Pace add twelve mules six wagons and camp furniture plus hay. County aims for about 95 mules with potential travel to Atlanta if needed. Convicts to receive new striped clothing hats and shoes per prison commission rules to prevent carrier stripping by lessee contractors.
Mrs. John Hopp of Webster Ava Glendale N Y writes she suffered ten years with age related symptoms catarrh and indigestion becoming weak and sleep deprived. After taking Peruana she reports better sleep and weight gain and urges other women to try it. Mrs Maliza Jolicy Parmele also thanks the remedy for relief and praise its usefulness.
A spring millinery opening is announced on Lamar Street in Americus. The vendor promises modern hats and stylish pieces at reasonable prices and invites ladies of Americus and vicinity to attend the opening scheduled for Wednesday, March 1st.
