The levee at New Orleans shows a holiday calm with few workers and many spectators. Black laborers are largely absent, except for Screwmen's Union members, while militia stand ready at armories. The crowd debates ending the standstill, weighing white union versus black labor on the docks.
Turned over to Clay county authorities in Dawson for a committal hearing when McAllister waived the committal trial and demanded grand jury indictment The prisoner remained in custody at Fort Gaines jail while Clay Superior Court readiness and the Hyatt murder case proceed McAllister’s supporters accompanied him to Dawson and to Fort Gaines and the court announced coroner Royal would serve as sheriff until the trial.
