Eva Winchester 18 and her mother are jailed in Tampa charged with killing J. O. Winchester 65, husband and father. The girl says she killed him on orders from her mother as an offering to the Lord after a sect meeting. They reported the scene to a teacher who notified the sheriff.
Cheyenne March 13 A preliminary hearing in the government suit for the annulment of Teapot Dome naval oil leases opened federal court. Special attorneys Owen Roberts and Atlee Pom erene sought an injunction to halt drilling and to appoint a receiver for the field. Washington March 13 Marines cleared Teapot Dome of trespassers after lease to Sinclair. General LeJeune testified troops acted on Roosevelt orders and Navy Dept requests.
In Torio on March 13, Japanese military forces blocked two American surveyors linked to Sinclair oil from entering Saghalien northern region, curbing their exploration efforts on the island.
In New York on March 13 the government demanded the libel of the passenger steamer Orduna in federal court following a narcotic and liquor raid on the vessel yesterday.
Senator Oscar W. Underwood of Alabama spoke before Kentucky South Carolina and Mississippi legislatures arguing for tax relief and tariff revision to aid farmers. He urged repeal of Fordney tariff rates and reopened export channels, stating the United States must buy from Europe so Europe can buy American goods. He stressed that prosperity in farming boosts manufacturing and noted today’s high taxes, opposing only modest relief from income tax.
Berlin March 13 President Ebert dissolved the reichstag after Socialists demanded a revision of tax laws and other emergency ordinances issued by the government.
Representative Burton of Ohio will chair a House committee to investigate alleged charges against two representatives before a Chicago grand jury. Members announced include Parnell of Indiana Michener of Michigan Wingo of Arkansas and Moore of Virginia. The panel, authorized by Speaker Gillett, aims to identify the men and the charges.
Roxie Stinson of Columbus testifies again in the Daugherty investigation as the Senate inquiry shifts from Teapot Dome to new testimony. She labeled Smith’s wealth rise and claimed deals involving Daugherty. Wheeler clashes with Howland as Daugherty condemns unsubstantiated rumors. The committee plans to call Edward B. McLean and Mal Daugherty.
Washington March 13 Senator Lenroot of Wisconsin resigns as oil committee chair and member. He will be replaced by Senator Ladd of North Dakota aligned with La Follette faction. Lenroot departed for Southern Pines to recuperate after a nervous exhaustion scare. The resignation followed cross examination of John F Majors in the McLean telegram inquiry.
Congressman J N Tincher of Kansas charged Secretary Newton D Baker and the War Department with graft in an address to the Republican state convention in Topeka on March 13. He asserted the department stole more money from the government in its initial transaction than any official took in the Teapot Dome affair.
Waynesboro March 13 Mrs R L Miller of Waynesboro named chairman of the women forces for the McAdoo campaign in Burke county Mrs Ed Blount appointed to a similar post with the Underwood forces Underwood is gaining strength in the county.
Clyde Bowen, 38, of Scott Kendricks Lumber, suffered horrific injuries when his face and skull were sawed away in an Argyle saw accident near Waycross. Near death earlier, Bowen revived enough to request water as hospital staff held little hope for recovery. lumbermen say he fell against a circular saw.
Senator Thomas Heflin of Alabama arrives in Americus from Savannah at 2 15 PM to address an Underwood rally at Rylander Theater this afternoon. He is greeted by Major James A Folt and local admirers, then hosts a reception at the Windsor Hotel before delivering his remarks.
Senator Heflin of Alabama will address Ware County voters this evening in support of Senator Oscar Underwood for president. He has spoken here before and a large audience is expected in Waycross.
Senator J. T. Heflin of Alabama spoke to Savannah luncheon clubs at noon and drew a large Bijou Theater audience in support of his presidential bid. He met Savannah leaders including Mrs. Frank Meltyye and Mrs. J. S. Hawkin and urged ousting all involved in the oil scandal while predicting the nomination and election of Underwood.
Seven hundred dozen eggs were sold in Sumter County at the first cooperative sale led by George O Marshall, county farm demonstration agent. Fifteen farmers contributed eggs brought to the courthouse basement and sent to Atlanta by express. Marshall plans ongoing weekly sales as egg produce increases.
Mrs S M Sellers and son Wilfiield noted by the United States Department of Agriculture for specialization by farmers in prime quality table poultry. The department urges dressing skills and proper handling for long distance transport and recommends fattening birds ten to fourteen days before killing for profitability. Guidance covers scalding or dry picking, chilling after slaughter, packing with ice in warm weather, grading by quality size and age, and avoiding overcrowding in coops to reduce losses.
Atlanta reports Jack Worth aged 33 of 268 East Hunter Street arrested by Detectives Ginn and Hunt in connection with the Rex pool room safe blowing and $1000 theft early Monday. Worth had earlier been sentenced to twelve months for aiding Frank Dupre’s escape and for allegedly attempting to dispose of a stolen diamond.
Legion Post No 2 held a fifty member meeting with a barbecue and approved staging an amateur play titled Kathleen in April. A producing concern contract and Rylander Theater access were arranged. The post set regular meeting nights and formed a committee to seek city hall as a permanent meeting place.
Supporters of Senator Oscar W Underwood planned an Atlanta rally but postponed it due to lack of a suitable building. The city auditorium is booked for Mr McAdoo. Senator Thomas Heflin of Alabama will instead speak at Waycross tomorrow night.
