The Department of Agriculture estimates prevented production from 1909 to 1921 averaged 4.23 billion dollars annually across 11 major crops. Corn led losses at 1.256 billion, with cotton, wheat, oats, flaxseed, barley, tobacco, apples, and other crops suffering large deficits due to weather disease pests and seed issues.
Two carloads of hogs were sold here last week through the Wilcox County Co operative Sales association. Pless and Miller of Cordele bought the stock after an average price of 7.22 cents per pound. A total of six cars have been shipped this season, four by a local stock dealer. The next cooperative sale will be May 2.
In Moultrie on March 12 an estimated 1000 Ku Klux Klan members will parade in masks and regalia despite the mayor's opposition but with city council majority approval. An imperial officer from Atlanta is expected to attend as Klan members from surrounding areas participate in an open air ceremony with many candidates to be initiated.
Asa G. Candler filed in federal court his answer to a half million dollar breach of promise suit brought by Mrs. Onezima de Bouchelle. He says he became engaged in January last year and declined to marry when she proposed immediate marriage. The answer mainly admits or denies numbered paragraphs.
Alec Ponder, a prominent Stew art county farmer with substantial bank stock and lands, fatally shot himself at his Richland home while in poor health. He died within an hour and reportedly left no statement. Survived by wife Carrie Frances and a son. daughter also named, Ephie Ponder 18 worked in Mississippi. Funeral set for Tuesday in Richland with interment in Richland Cemetery.
In Montezuma on March 12 an unidentified man attempting to leave town with a stale bale of cotton, mule and wagon fled as witnesses and police pursued. The mule belonged to H. A. Dove, the cotton to Nellie Whiteside, and the wagon from a local blacksmith. the man remains at large.
Nashville March 12. A report to be presented at the Southern Baptist convention in Kansas City cites a 75 million campaign launched in 1919. Since then 2,723 new churches were built and membership rose by 480,208. Sunday schools added 3,536 with enrollment up 485,626, and 770,568 baptisms recorded.
Houston dispatch reports E. Y. Clarke of Atlanta, former imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, charged with Mann Act violation, will be ready for trial late this month or early in April. Federal Judge Hitcheson to set a new trial date later today.
March 12 report from Crossing Savannah states J. T. Williams was killed by a Central of Georgia train from Macon at Egypt while attempting to cross the tracks in an automobile. His body was brought to Savannah for burial.
The police commission of Americas will meet on Tuesday March 20 to elect one patrolman and a lieutenant. Salaries are set at 100 and 110 dollars monthly with free uniforms. applicants must show good character and physical fitness and avoid drinking. Commission members include Nathan Murray Geo Turpin Dr Ss F Howell S L Hammond and Mayor J E Poole acting as ex officio chairman.
Josey Ivey won four dollars for selling the most veteran benefit tickets at Rylander theater earning fifty dollars for the fund. Mrs. J. H. Quarterman earned two dollars for forty one dollars and twenty five cents in tickets, donating the amount to the old vets. William Merritt won one dollar for thirty eight dollars and seventy five cents in sales. The fund totaled one hundred ninety five dollars and fifty five cents, short of about fifty dollars for sending all veterans to the New Orleans reunion. Citizens urged collective effort to raise enough for all veterans to attend.
A committee of Atlanta church workers will urge Governor Hardwick to commute the sentences of Ralph and George Baker, slated for execution March 16 for the murder of Deputy Sheriff J. W. Martin. The effort cites Ralph as 15 and George as mentally defective, while Walker county authorities dispute the claims. The group has already petitioned the prison commission and will present again to the governor.

A storm last night near Pinson, Tennessee, 12 miles south of Jackson, killed 20 and injured 75, with many victims among local residents including African Americans. About 50 dwellings were wrecked and a freight train was derailed. Relief teams from Jackson moved to aid the injured and hospitals were prepared. In Kentucky, a separate storm hit Madison and Fayette counties, killing three and injuring several. In South Portsmouth, high winds unroofed a school, killing Dennis Boggs, age 9, and injuring five others as pupils played in the yard.
Three youths Eli Horne W D Harvey and Owen Poole were injured in a Sunday afternoon crash on the River road at the Rylander farm five miles from Americus. Sol Ledbetter in a heavy car hit their light car causing its destruction and then fled. A physician treated the injured in Americus after they were brought in by Tift Pace. the accident site is a known danger area with prior mishaps.
Atlanta March 12 W H Hahr assistant federal prohibition director of Georgia was suspended by telegraphic instruction from Washington. No details available here but it follows a recent disagreement between Hahr and George Golding federal special intelligence officer.
Miss Mildred Pinkston arrives in Americus to lead Churchwell's ready-to-wear and millinery department in Albany. She comes highly recommended after training under Mrs Reidy at a fashionable Albany shop. Rouse Hamilton, longtime ready-to-wear staffer, will assist Miss Pinkston.
In Recklinghausen district eight Germans dead after clashes with French troops. One French soldier and three Germans wounded in Dortmund. A state of siege declared. hostages including the mayor of Buer and police chief held.
Paris March 12 Premier Poincare with Minister Letrockner and experts left for Brussels to join the Franco Belgian conference on Ruhr. The French believe Germany will surrender soon and foresee France and Belgium deciding how to use victory and Britain’s role in the settlement.
In Dublin on March 12 nearly 300 Irish prisoners landed from a British warship after weekend raids in England and Scotland. About two hundred men are from one balance, including three women from another, all escorted under heavy guard to jail.
With spring nearing, regular tournaments will restart at the Golf club. The Greens committee outlines a busy season and member inquiries suggest strong enthusiasm this year. The men’s “swattest” event is set for Thursday March 15 at 3 pm, followed by a ladies’ match on Tuesday March 20.
