Hayward elected to succeed Allen in Senate race
In joint session at Lixcoty Nebraska March, M. E. Hayward was chosen United States senator to succeed William Allen. He won 74 votes with one absentee due to sickness. Allen accepted fusion strength. Hayward, former governor candidate, was nominated in a Republican caucus and defeated by fusionist W. A. Poynter. The Democratic state convention opened at Kalamazoo Michigan with Ex-Congressman Whitney as temporary chairman delivering a sweeping speech on liberty and reform.
