Advertises a laxative syrup from the California Fig Syrup Co claiming pleasant taste and strong cleansing power. Attributes include kidney liver and bowel benefit without irritation, uses figs for flavor, and emphasizes senna based medicinal qualities. Notes distribution in multiple cities and price of six cents per bottle.
Maxina March 1 The Sixth Artillery drives off a rebel battery across the river near San Pedro halting their preparations for an assault on the Mantle Waterworks. Night brought quiet. General Hale and General Wheaton’s brigades cleared the country. Posts established at Negros Cebu and Moilo with clerks departing aboard the Espana.
President McKinley says no provisional army of 35000 volunteers will be formed under the army bill. He expects 65000 regulars until July 4, 1901, and aims to withdraw volunteers from Cuba and the Philippines as quickly as possible. Volunteers in Cuba and the Philippines will be sent home as regulars are deployed.
War Department reports no disturbance by the Eighth immune regiment at Lytle Georgia after their muster out. Inquiries about rioting were shown as irritation. governors and militia were mobilized but not sent. Officials said rumors about negro regiments often spark such reports and are burdensome to deny.
Preparations at the war department to ship 3 million dollars for Cuban troops under General Brooke and Paymaster General Gay. The money, partly in silver, will be shipped aboard a regular transport with a strong guard, date of sailing kept secret.
A Bristow prepared tally shows 503 president nominations sent to the Senate in the last session with 297 recess appointments. Nonconfirmed offices include Cedartown Georgia Mason City Iowa Hel Air Maryland Concord New Hampshire and others. State totals list numerous confirmations with Oregon and Alabama among the entries.
Savayyan March 7 Two regiments the Third Connecticut and the Sixth Immaries show strong interest in staying in service to go to the Philippines under the new army bill. Officers say many men will re enlist for the adventure and others prefer army life. The regiments will be mustered out soon and re enlistments are expected promptly.
Abraham Moses Leaps From Suspension Bridge to the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Covington on March 7, is found unconscious after rescue. The wealthy Natchez, Mississippi cotton broker, recently escaped a Jewish hospital where he was treated for nervous prostration. A memo book records the jump and his friends fear mental distress.
In Exgixcuam Alabama on March 7 Joseph Schrmidt a German carpenter and Brooks Hall a furnace laborer died after a hand car carrying raw material toppled into a furnace. The car rolled off a 100 foot drop and both men were instantly killed. Schrmidt left a wife and four daughters. Nearby reports note Senator Jones of Arkansas improved but with periodic attacks after a heart episode the previous day.
New York reports Rudyard Kipling’s health steadily improves after a protracted illness. F M Doubleday says the night was restful but Kipling remains closely watched for two weeks or more. Kipling’s eight year old daughter Ellie is said to be recovering well amid funeral privacy concerns for Jose.
March 7 dispatch notes Emperor William sent a sympathy letter to Mrs Kipling during her husband Rudyard Kipling's illness. Various papers discuss the gesture as evidence of German desire for peace with America, contrasting with tariff-war fears. Kipling’s Bombay birth and U.S. ties are in focus. An Atlanta bond vote seeks $200,000 for water system upgrades on April 12. In Tattnall County a revenue officer faces imprisonment amid a murder probe. West Point Miss sees a large fire destroying the Mary Holmes Industrial School and cotton—losses amount to about 340,000 dollars.
