An old ad copy touts Johnson’s Tonic as the cure for malaria poisoning and claims it is far superior to quinine. It urges readers to travel to purchase the tonic, asserting health and money motives and branding the product the world’s greatest medicine.
An elderly tester extols Johnsons Fever Tonic as an effective remedy for chills and fever. He claims it corrects liver symptoms, relieves costiveness, aids absorption, and improves overall health. The tonic has been marketed for seventeen years with claims of superior curative power and a 50 cent bottle price.
The second day of King Edward's sherry sale attracted prominent Americans including J Pierpont Morgan Charles T Yerkes Foxhall Keene and Richard Croker with bids from St James and Buckingham Palace cellars. Croker bought 61 dozen pale golden sherry destined for his Democratic club. American theater figures also bought wine as line auctioneer pursued New York hotel owners bids.
The Independent will publish Senator Orville Platt on pacification in Cuba. He questions whether a new Cuban government can succeed, notes some favorable and unfavorable conditions, and argues the U S must have a real republic to ensure peace and safeguard interests, avoiding a fragile paper state or recurring revolutions.
In Montgomery Alabama on June 26 the constitutional convention reported changes from the committee on counties and boundaries. Proposals include expanding state territory, allowing two thirds votes to move voters between counties, creating counties only by similar vote, and restricting county site moves while Shelby County’s site remains at Columbiana until voters decide otherwise. The suffrage committee is expected to report soon. Also Mrs McKinley’s condition improved enough for a drive with the president.
W Va June 24 authorities report a flood surpassing Johnstown in scale with hundreds missing and at least 200 dead in the Elkhorn valley. Norfork and Western tracks and telegraph lines are destroyed, rescue efforts hampered, and dozens of mines flooded with thousands displaced or stranded.
Chinese American society at Puilaparrata passed resolutions protesting Wu Tingfang Chinese minister for their Fourth of July program. The group accuses Wu of covertly aiding the Boxers during their massacre of Christians in China and of misleading the public about his stance.
Jack Epps known as Happy Jack was killed in northern county by a Giles County Tennessee deputy while resisting arrest for alleged disorderly conduct. The incident follows a troubled period after the Epps family moved from Indian Territory and endured harsh winter conditions. A prominent local man recalls Epps as well bred from a notable family, leaving behind a wife and several children. In other news, Mrs. Pelemeria Decker of Philadelphia, widow of a War of 1812 private, at nearly 99 and blind, has been granted a pension of 122 dollars a month with arrears due.
Care Town reports details of a June 6 engagement near Ilse where British forces surprised De Wet’s Boer camp. Boers charged, captured a convoy, then withdrew under reinforcements. hand to hand fighting ensued with fatalities and prisoners, including a staff officer wounded and captured. Jacobus Botha, Cape assembly member for Aliwalworth, was captured and his house burned for treason.
Cuartotte North Carolina June 25 farmers in this part of the state face despondency from persistent rains. Cotton and corn suffer, ground remains too wet for plowing, acres left unworked risk weeds and grass. Harvest nears and immediate action is urged despite poor conditions. Weather and soil damage complicate efforts of otherwise capable farmers.
June 26 report from St. Perenspuno notes representatives of a Dutch syndicate with 70,000,000 florins in capital arrived to study plans to sewer St. Petersburg. Also reported is a fatal lightning incident in Charlotte, N Y, with a family tragedy near Lincoln county.
