Marcus Garvey, self described provisional president of Africa, is sentenced to five years in the Atlanta penitentiary for defrauding the public through Black Star Line stock sales. He is guarded heavily in court to prevent mob action by duped investors.
The Andersonville Consolidated School District trustees met in the Shipp and Sheppard office and sold a block of five and one half per cent bonds to J H Hilsman And Co of Atlanta. Proceeds will fund a new consolidated school building with total issue of twelve thousand dollars. Bond issue passed by 46 to 11 and construction contracts for brick or stucco building awarded. work to begin immediately. Trustees are Paul Fasterlin C A Slappey and C A Johnson, with strong patron support.
Waycross June 21 permits show multiple projects including Claude Parker repairs at 517 Folks street for 300 dollars and an 8 room apartment on Izlar and Roosevelt for 4,000. Other listings include R G Marshall repairs 109 Hamilton street 600, Mrs A R Jennings garage Nicholls street 100, Dr W K Meeks recovery 1105 Grove avenue 250, Dr D M Bradley six room 624 Nicholls street 3,500, H Lester Marvis alteration 516 Pendleton street 750, Mrs Margaret Bailey four room 422 Oak 1,000, James Bone six room 6111 2 Pendleton street 2,800 totaling 13,300.

Five men trapped when a coal chute at Atlantic Coast Line shops in Waycross collapsed onto a locomotive tender and coal gondola. Two to five hours passed before rescue. Engineer Sanford Cliett underwent leg surgery after injuries, and Charlie Bleckley died. Laborers C R Griffin and four Black workers were present. one stepped aside for water, leaving five unaccounted. The cause remains unknown.
Waycross city treasurer announces unpaid 1923 school tax will be turned to the city marshal for collection. Tax books closed June 1, executions issued for nonpayment, final settlement with the board of education showed 36060.92 paid, about 15000 still to be collected to fund school needs.
Valdosta on June 21 announces unprecedented melon trade setup with two telegraph offices adding operators and special wires. The Agricultural Department Bureau of Economics runs a radio system to gather and distribute melon market reports from a hotel facility.

SELMA Ala June 21 The boll weevil pest has grown into a serious menace to the cotton crop farmers report. One Hazen area farmer says the bugs eat buds and leaves on young plants leaving few young bolls. Experts say the pest feeds on pulp in young bolls, though some claim it also eats the plant. Heavy rains predict an immense weevil crop this season.
Messrs A L Poindexter and J C Swain, lessees of the Myon hotel in Tifton, visited Moultrie to inspect the Hotel Colquitt. The Colquitt may be leased long term in a few months if lessees invest substantially in improvements, officials of the Baptist State Mission Board say, owners of the hotel.
In Savannah on June 21 Georgia opened its newest automobile road linking Savannah with Tybee at the edge of the Atlantic. The road cost nearly $2,000,000 and was marked by an elaborate ceremony as a caravan of several hundred automobiles rolled onto the highway just before noon.
Valdosta reports the tobacco curing season has begun in Lowndes County. By week’s end smoke will curl upward from hundreds of curing houses across the area’s farms. Some barns are prepared and handling early crops, but this week starts full operations.
Waycross resident A. E. Carey will graduate from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa. Exercises set for this evening and Carey is a former Coast Line shops employee. His wife and family still reside in Waycross.

Reverend A. J. Hutchinson, long active in Americas, is seriously ill at his son J. W. Hutchinsons home in Dalton after moving there weeks ago. Family letters say condition remains critical but show slight improvement hopes. Friends in Americas and nearby areas react with deep regret.
Washington June 21 Commissioner General Husband of the Immigration Service asked the solicitor general for the Labor Department for an opinion on whether under current immigration law steamship lines could be required to provide detention facilities for immigrants detained at Ellis Island. The proposal is in response to criticism in British parliament over the island housing methods, seen as costly to the government.
Reports allege the State Highway Department neglects the main road from Valdosta toward Macon. A traveler who went via Thomasville Albany Americus Fort Valley and Barnesville says the only poor stretch is the Macon route. The road is under state control and is being treated as ignored.
Leslie June 21 The revival services at the Leslie Methodist church led by Rev. J. E. Sampley of Vidalia attract a large crowd Tuesday evening as interest grows ahead of the scheduled conclusion Tuesday.

New York June 21 The New York Curb Market suspended one member for a year and expelled another in a move against unethical trading. Benjamin Alexander was expelled for an act inconsistent with curb principles. A. B. Morley of A B Morley and Company was suspended for an act detrimental to exchange interests. Alexander was connected with J Schneck.
At Central Baptist Church Dr Bolton captured attention with The Mission of the Church in the City. Visitors from Plains attended as the revival discussed city work and evangelization. Morning services 10 to 11 grow. evening worship at 7 45 with prayers for various circles.
Valdosta June 21 The county board of tax equalizers is winding up the year work and expects the books to be returned to the receiver after clearing minor odds and ends today. Heat estimates suggest changes in valuations will be small if any from last year, with most returns based on 1922 figures and only limited rearrangements needed by the board.

In Chicago on June 21 a major fire tore through a three story South Side tenement building after starting in a furniture store owned by a Black man. Ten people died and at least 25 were hurt as residents fled via broken stairs and windows while firefighters evacuated and rescued many. Police later arrested Joseph Smith, owner of the furniture store, amid incendiary claims.
Atlanta June 21. Commissioner Brown faces a Formosa request from K Yoshioka, Taiwan governor, for information on Georgia agriculture and industry. The Japanese letter asks for pamphlets, government returns, and statistics on Georgia crops and outputs, noting Georgia yam, Elberta peach, and South Georgia tobacco.
Telegrams report the Atlanta death of 28 year old Mrs Mabel Bennett Weissinger due to heart failure while swimming in a city pool. The body will be sent to Newbern Alabama for funeral and interment in the family lot on Friday. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Richard Lee Bennett of Newbern one brother Leonard Lee Bennett of Atlanta husband John L Weissinger of Atlanta two uncles Henry C Hoot of Birmingham and Herbert L Hoot of York grandmother Mrs Cornelia E Hoot of York and extensive Alabama connections. She was beloved in her Atlanta circle and Alabama visits.
Will Robinson, a farmer, was arrested by Sheriff Kiarvey on liquor making charges after a deputy found a complete still setup near his Sumter area home. The scene, described as having copper worm and corn beer, was located near the Lee county line with Plains residents E. R. Chappell and Jno. Wise assisting.
