War department dispatch from Wasnixgrox dated June 16 reports General Otis announcing the repulse of an insurgent attack on American forces at San Fernando. Rebels under Aguinaldo were driven back with heavy losses. Fourteen Americans wounded.
From Masia June 16 Spanish prisoners report Filipino forces demoralized and low on ammunition after fighting between Las Pinas and Bacoor. 121 insurgent bodies buried. Spaniards claim many rifles thrown into river. American lines hold Imus as civilians flee and disorder grows in Cavite Viejo and surrounding areas.
In Brussels a Herald interview, M. Andre the Belgian consul general at Manila says Lana's death is a godsend, calling him the soul of the rebellion and the most sanguinary figure in Aguinaldo's army who tortured Spanish prisoners. Andre claims Luna was treacherous and felonious and issued a challenge to a duel that Luna did not fulfill.
George Beau regard Barrows, the principal in the Marion Clark kidnapping case, was sentenced to 14 years and ten months in prison. Carrie Jones, the accomplice known as Belle Anderson, pleaded guilty and received four years. Mrs Barrow’s trial to face further charges will follow.
Sensation grows from the Augusta Ga fire that leveled a business block. Investigations reveal policies issued by unlicensed companies for the Montgomery building and others. Comptroller Wright is directed to prosecute each illegal policy writer to the full extent of the law.
In Randolph county near Wedowee a negro believed to be Hays Phillips attempted to assault Miss Sophronie Whaley. After his escape deputies forced entry and fired on gathered negroes. Three were wounded badly and may die, Phillips escaped. Lynching feared as search for Phillips continues.
A catastrophic blast at the Caledonia mine, Glace Bay, caused by accumulated gas, killed at least twenty workers including Thomas Johnson the underground manager. About 160 workers were underground. 60 had left before the explosion, with rescue efforts and mounting death toll continuing as gas and coal smoke filled the shaft.
Cleveland city transit begins resuming service on Euclid Wade Park Cedar and Wilson avenues after overnight disturbances. No rioting. obstructions cleared. union denies unofficial talks but settlement appears possible as drivers return to work and placeholder talks resume with company officials.
Lassie Mich June 16 Governor Pingree closes the legislature by vetoing the amended beet sugar bounty bill and the $40 000 appropriation for a state building and Buffalo Pan American exposition exhibit. He condemns the legislature for failing to tax the wealthy and for favoring tax dodgers and calls out insufficient pay for volunteers.
News brief reports a tariff adjustment by the St. Louis and Tennessee River Packet company affecting routes from St. Louis to Florence Alabama and to Memphis and affiliate lines. Passenger rates along the river were reduced by about a third while freight rates, previously high for a year, were raised back to earlier territory levels following recent acquisition of two rival steamship lines.
