June 15. Fire caused by a spark from a defective stove flue destroyed the home of J. T. Byrd in Panhandle district. Byrd was painfully burned during a vain effort to subdue the flames.

Rum runners chased by US boats off Atlantic City
In fog near shore two government boats from Barnegat sighted rum runners about 280 feet from shore. The vessels hailed them to stop and a running gun battle unfolded as bullets whistled over the boardwalk. The smugglers escaped at full speed into the sea after near the shore contact.
