The A L I boys marched from Central depot to their armory last night tired but happy, drawing cheers from sleeping citizens. Reports praise their discipline and vigor, note an officers’ guard mount, a governor’s review, and a girls cotillion, with spectators and families celebrating the homecoming and the unit’s strong showing at Camp Northen.
The June change from spring to summer wear brings Negligee and Semi-Negligee shirts to prominence with trench collars and link cuffs. Solid colors and stripes appear, with Percale fabrics also popular. Manhattan brand offers New York Paris London styles priced from 1.00 to 2.50.
The S A M railroad baseball team challenges the merchants of Americus to play at Furlow Lawn on Wednesday June 1st. The game will be called at 4 50 p m. Only bona fide S A M employees and merchants may play. If accepted, contact Manager W J Matthews at once.
The Royal Arcanum Supreme Council held an eight day annual session in Providence starting June 1 with about sixty five members and officers from twenty state grand councils. On June 4 they visited Boston to view a new five story headquarters costing about 60000 dollars. The council toured Newport and Cres cent Park by boat and overland. Georgia was represented by Hascom Myrick Jenny Garland S Prior and James M Pace. Myrick was elected officer for the fifth time. Next session will be in Minneapolis June 4 1889 at the West House. The order numbers over 1000 members and grows by about ten thousand yearly with about 3000 members and sixty councils in Georgia. Sumter county showcased hospitality to Americus during the May 1x visit.
At the Kimball House in Atlanta Captain Bell mingled during the state convention and mistook a stranger’s winks for an invitation, while a quiet Sunday wedding in Americus united Miss Cora Finney of Fort Valley and Mr. John Ansley with Mr. W. T. Ragan present. The event pleased friends of the couple, and Miss Finney’s prominence in Americus is noted. Nearby, Mrs. M. S. Bird, a cherished resident three miles from Americus, died at 11:20 PM leaving daughters Carrie Bird, Mrs. Kam Lee of Brunswick, and Mrs. B C Doughue, with funeral notices to follow.
A black triangular flag over a white square was seen at Hotel Windsor signaling weather. The system uses five flags to predict conditions such as fair weather rain or snow and warmer or colder trends. Mr. Morgan Eldridge oversees daily flag changes with reports from Allanta.
Friday night the graduating class will receive diplomas and present a program featuring essays, recitations, and songs by Miss Magee Dunn, Miss Maud Stokes, Master Chas Callaway, Miss Minnie Greene, Miss Rosa McLendon, Miss Lizzie McLendon, and others. Diplomas will be presented as the school chorus performs and the event closes. Court yesterday opened and disposed of most cases in eight hours with guilty pleas in larceny and related offenses. several defendants received sentences including ten months or four years, while others faced jail terms or costs.
Invitations for the Hotel Windsor opening ball are being sent nationwide. The event, next Thursday, is described as a major social and business milestone. Card's Band of Macon will provide music, and A. E. Butcher designed the invitations at the paper’s job office. The piece notes the event as a highlight of Americus society and local business progress.
