Police with warrants raided centers and rounded up more than a hundred prominent communists and socialists across Japan. Authorities say the suspects planned to organize a communist state, with raids carried out in Tokyo and other cities.
The Thalean Consolidated High School trustees elected new faculty for the year starting this fall. Prof. E. T. Moore will continue as principal with Miss Louise Goodson, Miss Ruth Chappell, and Mrs. Morgan Stevens as grade teachers, and Miss Dorothy Harvey as music teacher.
The first peaches of the season moved from Americus on Monday with W E Brown and Son shipping five crates to a Jacksonville fruit concern. The Mayflowers crate was sent Saturday night while regular shipments began Monday. The crop is very short this season due to a late freeze that killed nearly all Uneedas, with other varieties such as Hileys and Georgia Belles seriously damaged. Thomas B Hooks, a leading Uneeda grower, will not ship from his orchards this season though some shipments of other varieties are possible.
Arthur H. Moon, brother of Herbert Moon of Americus, died at St. Joseph's Infirmary in Atlanta late Monday. Mrs Moon and relatives from Americus had traveled to his bedside and were with him at the time of death. Moon had served as superintendent of public schools at Tifton and is survived by his widow and several sisters and brothers.
In Fitzgerald June 5 a campaign by many business men sought closer ties between farmers and merchants and between city and county. They visited farmers, learned family sizes and living conditions to improve understanding and cooperation.
Reports of an impending Honduran civil war gain urgency as a steamer Hildueras arrives in New Orleans with women and children sent for safety by husbands and fathers. Among passengers are Honduran officials said to be arriving for an indefinite stay, though their presence could not be confirmed.
Twenty thousand Shriners marched two miles from the capitol to Washington circle in a colorful pageant for the forty ninth annual convention. President Harding reviewed the parade with Imperial Potentate McCandless and his divan as heat prostrations and ambulances dotted the scene near the White House. The Garden of Allah backdrop and burning sands impressed spectators despite scorching sun.
Paris June 5 The Chamber of Deputies backed firm measures to suppress the Royalists after a heated political maneuver to compel Premier Poincare to promise vigorous action against the Royalist organization.
The Julius Rosenwald fund has awarded 1100 to help build an industrial school for black children at Sumter. County residents must supplement enough funds and provide land. Government support covers five-eighths of teacher salaries. students must devote 50 to 60 percent of time to industrial work. Col J E D Shipp leads efforts to create four major industrial schools for Negroes in the county.
Savannah June 5 The Chatham county legislative delegation heads to Atlanta for a busy session as many local groups push measures. The Order of Railway Conductors seeks abolition of the fee system in paying county officers.
Notices posted in Columbus report a forthcoming legislature bill to establish city planning and zoning and to amend the city charter to permit an ad valorem tax levy for current expenses, renewing authority. Another notice outlines a bill to abolish the Muscogee county treasurer’s office.
Washington June 5 The North Carolina franchise and ad valorem property taxes on the Norfolk and Southern the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and the Seaboard Air Line Railway were sustained by the Supreme Court today as valid tax levies.
A county tax official survey shows 621 Negro families left Wilkes County in the past year for northern states seeking higher wages and different working conditions. The exodus represents about one third of the county's male Negro population.
In Leslie on June 5 at 2 30 pm two young Black children, 5 and 8, were burned to death in a barn belonging to Walta Cooper on Mr Reese Simms farm. The fire started when a child playing with matches set hay ablaze. Four other children were present and the fire trapped the victims behind flames before it was extinguished. Simms reports about 400 dollars in losses with no insurance.
Committees raising funds for an amateur ball club in the summer collected $550 during Monday’s canvass. R. C. Lane led the effort, noting that court in session kept many attorneys from contributing. Despite the shortfall, widespread promise of support and attendance at games was reported. Funds will be sought again with a definite team announcement to follow.
Lexington Ky June 5 George L Williams of Blumandale Georgia and James Brewer of this city are in separate hospitals with bullet wounds from a gun battle near Springfield Kentucky early today.
The Steve Barlow place containing 2550 acres was sold to Lee G. Council for 5100 dollars at the courthouse this morning after property advertised for state and county taxes drew bids from I. B. Small, tax collector, with no other bidders. Various parcels totaling acres across multiple landowners were sold to satisfy principal, interest, and costs.
Washington June 5 disabled American veterans say representatives from the Veterans Bureau and national veterans organizations will draft a legislative program for the next Congress. one Spanish war veteran and two representatives from each of the American Legion veterans of foreign wars disabled American veterans and the Veterans Bureau will work out plans for remedial laws to aid disabled soldiers.
Clem Bennett a black man accused of killing Will Lott in Sumter superior court was acquitted after a several hour trial. The victim Lott a well known Americus Negro was killed at a Huntington mullet supper in a fight over a revolver with no prior trouble between participants. Bennett’s defense was led by Dan Chappell J C Graham and Gordon Howell appointed by the court. Additional cases disposed include Sam Armstrong liquor plea and chain gang sentence Jerry Jackson legging a guilty plea delayed sentence Nehemiah Gervin guilty plea to stabbing and 12 months on the gang Charles Blood tried for liquor law violations with defense by J C Graham and state by Jule Felton.
The Piedmont Limited is the name chosen for Southern Railway Nos. 33 and 34 serving New Orleans to New York. The naming prize of $200 was awarded to Dr. Howard E. Rondthaler, president of Salem College, for first suggesting the name.
Americas relatives were notified Monday of an accident sustained by Mrs. F. M. Andrews who broke her arm in a fall at Fitzgerald during a visit to her sister Mrs. O. H. Minter. The fracture, though very painful, is not considered serious and she will return home within a few days.
Ed Roberson was found guilty in Sumter Superior Court for the fatal shooting of Pete Evans at Robersons front door on a plantation near Americus about a month ago. He received a sentence of four to six years in the Georgia chain gang.
Homer Woods, a Black man, was shot and killed by Police Lieutenant John Worthy in Sherlock's alley behind Americas Vulcanizing Works after being surprised entering Sherlock's store. Officer Omar Bass arrived after the shooting as other officers checked the burglary scene. Worthy acted alone and Woods did not halt.
June 5 Lions Kiwanis and local board of trade plan a dinner next Friday night to finalize the five year program for the community. John W. Greer of Moultrie will be the chief speaker and many citizens from farming and business will attend. The program is being shaped for the meeting and is expected to be an important event for all interested.
Judge W V Custer of the Albany circuit will rule at Bainbridge next Saturday on whether the Albany South Georgia Fair Association can sell its assets to the City of Albany to cover the association debts. A temporary restraining order favors C D Stiles, who seeks to stop the sale until two damage suits stemming from his daughter Julia Stiles injury at the 1920 fair are settled.
In Albany Georgia on June 5 donors from Albany Dawson and Arlington have raised baseball funds and seek a fourth city to join the loop. Americus is expected to be that city and funds will be raised there this week. The plan aims for an even number of clubs to ensure games, not a formal league.

Richmond June 5 Rev E L Pierce pastor of four Cumberland county Baptist churches is dead and R O Garret 45 Cumberland county clerk is in serious condition at the hospital after a shooting affray in the preacher's yard at Cumberland courthouse.
Five people were killed and about forty injured when a Grand Trunk special train derailed two miles west of Durand Michigan. The Knights Templar Commanderies from Western Michigan were en route to their state convention in Flint, after gathering at Grand Rapids.
Sumter county oats suffered about 25 percent damage from a prolonged wet season, per county farm demonstration agent George A. Marshall. Rye also suffered, wheat yield largely saved by early harvest. Estimated county oats before the rains was 250000 bushels, making the loss 50000 to 60000 bushels worth around 24000 dollars, much of which would have been fed if gathered.
Cordele June 5 Miss Ruth Scandrett associate secretary of the industrial department of the local YWCA has gone to attend the national YWCA student conference in Blue Ridge North Carolina from June 5 to 15. She will also attend the national YWCA industrial conference at Camp Jima fuska from June 26 to July 6.
Atlanta Post No 1 of the Disabled Veterans of the World War aims to host the national convention in 1924. About one hundred local members are expected to attend this year’s meeting in Minneapolis.
June 5 in Atlanta reports Campbell Woodridge announces J B Shores promoted to traveling freight and passenger agent for the Texas and Pacific railway. Shores formerly served as chief for the general agency in Atlanta.
Lausanne June 5 The Turkish delegation head Ismet Pasha refused to adopt any allied proposals and renewed concessions in Anatolia he claimed no authority to decide the matter and a private meeting with top allied delegates proved fruitless.
Announcement today of a demonstration of the Florida plan for boll weevil control set for June 13 in Sumter county on Neal A. Ray’s farm near Americus. C A Martin Seaboard Air Line development agent will supervise to explain details to farmers merchants business people and any interested citizens. The event will begin in the early morning and organizers urge broad participation.
George P. McKinstry aged 45 died at City hospital after complications from an appendicitis operation. Funeral services were at his Farlow street home conducted by Rev. James B. Lawrence. Interment planned in Ellington Conn. Survived by widow Helena R. McKinstry, son John, mother Mrs Lucy Allen McKinstry, and brother John McKinstry. He was born in Ellington Feb 21 1878 and long known in the Americus-Columbia area.
