British ships land 100 sailors at Taku amid allied powers talks without incident.
Senators and representatives who fought for the Confederacy met at the Metropolitan hotel in Washington on May 29. James D. Hardison of Muscatine spoke, General Wheeler attended, and Daniel paid tribute to Robert E. Lee. The event featured addresses from many lawmakers praising the South and loyalty to the Union as it stands.
Chicago May 20 The Grand Army of the Republic posts may return Confederate flags as a feature of the encampment but will be guided by Congress action. Several prominent G A R members oppose the plan, while others seek authorization for the banner return amid mixed sentiment.
