In Los Angeles on July 27 James Kirkwood actor and director married screen actress Lila Lee who used the name Augusta Appell when obtaining the license. She was listed as 18 and he as 40. This marks Kirkwood's third marriage.
In Atlanta on July 27 a resolution by Representative Bennett and twenty-two others accuses state department clerks of causing a false vote count during the general appropriations bill debate. The measure seeks to bar any current or recent state employees from House involvement and calls for investigation. The house and committee of the whole discussed the alleged miscount as amendments moved to strike funds for the bureau of markets were debated.
PACIS July 27 The French reply to Britain's reparations note to Germany will be delivered in London Saturday or Sunday. It is said to accept part of the British Ruhr occupation suggestions and seeks clarification on others. The note upholds the Franco-Belgian declaration that passive resistance in the Ruhr and elsewhere must cease before negotiations begin.
Americus Masons will be well represented at the Masonic district convention to be held next Tuesday and Wednesday at Vienna with Vienna Masons as hosts. The opening public program will be at the school auditorium Tuesday with Senator W. S. George delivering the principal address. The celebration includes a memorial to the late J. E. Sheppard of Americus and features a full schedule of speakers, readings, and the Masters Degree by the Americus team.
Miss Orale Williams daughter of Mr and Mrs G Lester Williams underwent an appendicitis operation this morning at City hospital. She was stricken Thursday night with pain in the appendix region and examination showed a greatly inflamed condition making immediate surgery imperative. Reports from the hospital at 3 o clock state the operation was successful and Miss Williams is responding splendidly to the anesthetic.
The Sumter delegation George Riley E A Hines and Stephen Pace urged the house agriculture committee to defeat the bill that would abolish district agricultural schools. The committee voted 16 to 3 to report adversely to the house. The senate later endorsed Pace's consolidation plan for tax receiver and tax collector offices in large counties and to allow all county officers to be salaried.
Grave fears are entertained for Mrs Whitey Oliver who underwent an operation for leg amputation due to blood poisoning. It is now believed the infection has spread, keeping her condition very serious. Before marriage she was Miss Mary Lizzie DeLoach, famed canning club entrant at county and state fairs.
Mrs. J H Chafin Harvey Chafin Jr Mary Claire Chafin and Elizabeth Chafin left today for Washington Georgia called there by the death of Mrs J B Chafin mother of Mr Chafin.
Augusta July 27 Dr J M Caldwell H A Woodward and Dr W D Jennings council members hold two positions contrary to law and should resign one or more posts per a letter from Jacob Phinizy identifying himself as a leading taxpayer. Caldwell and Jennings also serve as city physicians while Woodward is solicitor of Richmond County Juvenile Court and fifth ward councilman. They state resigning concerns arise from city attorney opinions that code was not violated.
Atlanta July 27 Representative A J Perryman chairing the house penitentiary committee told the Atlanta City club that pardoning powers must be divorced from politics. He outlined two bills to reorganize the Georgia state prison system, saying society and the judiciary suffer from politicized paroles and clemency and urged citizens to act. Also speaking were Covington and Nelson Shipp.
Health department June report cites 9 630 re inspections, 544 nuisances reported, 448 abated, 87 office calls. Meat totals include 84 740 pounds beef and 82 520 pounds pork. Boilerplate disease counts show typhoid four cases and measles 92. Two deaths noted in closing line.

Mrs J B Chafin died at 3 am in Washington Georgia after a stroke of paralysis. Her son J H Chafin was at her bedside. The family will travel for the funeral in Washington on Saturday morning. The community mourns a beloved mother and neighbor.
Funeral services for Cynthia Croxton a well known Sumter county resident were held at Friendship Baptist church on Thursday afternoon. She is survived by two brothers Jack and J B Croxton and a sister Lizzie Croxton of Americus. She was a Baptist and faced a long illness with Christian faith and cheer amid wide friendships.

Joe Evans, a Black laborer tearing down the Byrom building, was trapped when a partially torn wall fell on him on the second floor. He suffered suspected internal injuries, with no broken bones, and was transported to the local colored hospital after Dr. Lee Williams provided first aid.
