Ashley Cocke and Tom Lauderdale were executed by hanging in Greenville after being found guilty of murdering engineer Wray Ash Ley. Thousands gathered as Sheriff Hunt deployed deputies. Cocke cursed upon the gallows, Lauderdale remained calm, and both met their fate without incident.
San Francisco July 23 Otto F Meder former German army lieutenant and self styled scion of an aristocratic Hanover family is jailed on felony charges. At the German consulate he had just received a letter from a New Orleans woman claiming money paid for forged papers and warning of police discovery if he does not return funds. In Raleigh a separate case sees Lawrence Davis accused of offering a 1000 mile walk ticket to induce Lorenzo Morris to kill Mrs Catherine White Morris was killed with an axe and Davis was ordered held for trial with bail granted.

Hamburg July 21 The Primus an excursion steamer with 385 passengers on board was cut in two and sunk by the tug Hansa in the Elbe. About 60 drowned and thirteen miles recovered. The disaster occurred between Blanknez and Nienstedten as the Primus crossed from the southern to northern fairway. Fifty reached the tug by ropes and ladders and seventy were picked up by the tug’s boats. Passengers included members of the Eilbeck male choral society.

William Filer, a Harrisburg steelworker, allegedly jealous of Harry Bennett, killed Bennett and then shot his wife Clara Filer through the heart as she was being carried into a house in Steelton. Filer fled and has not returned to work.
