Plans to move around July 15 to the Americus Jewelry building at 421 Jackson Street. Sale of dry goods clothing shoes hats and gents furnishings at marked inducements. Shop urges buyers that it is easier to buy than to sell and to take advantage of the low prices.
In a cash only sale, numerous fabrics including Percales, Organdies, Cordatte, and White Welr POK are offered at deep discounts. Yardage is advertised as low as 4 to 12 cents with strong emphasis on inexpensive silks, plains, and patterned textiles. Limited stock of imitations, checks, stripes, and Hamburg Edging are featured at reduced cash prices. Measurements are given in yards and fractions, with warnings that credit will not receive sale pricing.
Local gents shop announces drastic reductions across department store items as it moves to a new location. Neckwear, shirts, and suspenders discounted. 10 to 25 percent off shoes and suits. Complete line of fabrics and linens offered at greatly reduced prices to clear stock before relocation.
The president named several lieutenant colonels of volunteers who served with gallantry in the war with Spain. Major J. F. Bell from Kentucky, later Manila, now adjutant general of volunteers. Captain Heebert II Serjeant, former Pithimmune colonel, West Point graduate. Captain Jonn B. Brereton of the Twenty fourth Infantry, participant at San Juan Hill. Captain E H. Wauuier of the Tenth Infantry, West Point graduate, Cuba duty as brigade quartermaster. Captain Plummer recommended for brevet for San tiago gallantry at Washington on July 10.
Muddy waters surround Paray as the Thirteenth Infantry is nearly isolated by inundated bridges and three feet of water under bunks. Cooks wade knee deep while meals are prepared. River Pasig overflows and Manila harbor blocks all traffic. Otis proposes two veteran regiments for recruitment. Corbin objects naming confusion, altering to Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh United States volunteer infantry.
A nine coach special train carrying teachers to the National Education Association convention collided with a freight train near Newman California. Two women were killed and 18 injured. Names include Addie Harris Lena Hammond Clara Morehouse Elizabeth White May Oliver Helen English and Sallie May Oliver among the injured. The crash occurred at about 40 mph as the freight train took water and burned an empty coach and three flat cars.
A North Carolina sheriff shot and killed his deputy Gallman at close range after a dispute over the deputy's drinking. A coroner's jury ruled justifiable homicide. Additional dispatches report a lynching confession, a railway accident killing two, a pastor killed by a train, a manslaughter conviction in Startanzaure, and other brief fatal incidents across several towns.
Lexington Ky July 10 The Republican state convention begins tonight with headquarters opening after county meetings. Attorney General Taylor appears to have enough instructed votes to win the gubernatorial nomination, while Stone Pratt leaders doubt his strength. Opponents argue not personal but that he is not the strongest choice and expect thousands of Democrats to vote Republican. Uniting on John W. Yerkes could widen support among the rank and file, while minor offices attract many hopefuls as contests have not yet formed.
Weatherford, held in Huntsville for the murder of his father Engineer E Weatherford of the Florence railway yard, was spirited from Tuscumbia by Sheriff J S Grexham and Deputy Will Donnelly to the Madison county jail. The case centers on a life insurance motive as Weatherford, last heir, allegedly planned the slaying.
The Memphis district including western Tennessee and neighboring states reports June weather as fairly favorable for cotton but with moisture shortages. Recent rains improved prospects, though stands are below average due to seed quality and prior weather. Insects and climatic damage linger, with replanting common and final outcomes uncertain. Corn suffers drought but expected to yield fairly well district wide.
In Washing ton on July 10 reports say the High Joint Commission may not meet in August unless Senator Fairbanks secures a satisfactory settlement of the boundary question and a modus vivendi. No new communication from Mr. Choate or progress toward reconvening in Quebec on Aug 3.
